2407WFP-HC Ghosting problem - solution

Other than the ghosting problem am pretty sattisfied with the monitor. No dead pixels, bright, crisp pictures, tons of connections and a lovely design.

Other than the ghosting??! LOL

I should hope you're more than satisfied for > £400 :p

I wish I could be but am not:(. This issue has stolen outta me the joy of having a 24" monitor coz what am thinking all the time is when a fix will be out not how beautiful the screen is.

Should things go bad I'll simply sell it/refund it.

Baddass,

The Dell thread has been updated.

Bad news for Dell owners. Past 30 day period the best we can get is a refurb one. Thats it from me. Am requesting a refund and I rather save money for the upcoming BenQ FP241WZ which is supposed to be stunning.

Can anyone confirm this doesn't happen on the vanilla 2407WFP? I am seriously thinking on buying this one seeing as the new HC version has that ghosting issue.

I was going to go for the hc version but i think i may pick up a normal 2407wfp instead, feel sorry for those that took the plunge.

Very nice thanks Baddass. In case of a firmware upgrade what happens? They take your screen upgrade it and bring it back?

normally it would involve returning screen to Dell, or sending to a local service centre, where they flash firmware and send it back to you. this is what happened with the 2407WFP when it was released (banding issue). others returned screen and were just sent a new A01 instead....it varies, but basically you will have to have Dell's involvement i would think

ta, will update accordingly. The FP241WZ has been out a while by the way :)

the black ghosting issue is a new thing, seems inherant to the new panel / electronics used.

Have the people with the ghosting problem here tried that calibration fix? You don't need a hardware calibrator you can just use the same settings as in the link. I'm just curious if it works. Seems like quite a serious problem to ship the monitor with.

from what ppl say elsewhere, that helps eliminate the green ghosting issue, but the black ghosting is more severe and still there, even with some colour correction

Quite right. The ghosting cannot be eliminated, no matter what you do. I did eliminate the green snake though.

Cheekykid - can you test a theory for me? Can you switch the screen to a lower resolution (1024 x 768 or something) and up the refresh rate from 60Hz to 75hz? You may need to use Powerstrip or something, or create a custom resolution to allow this, but see if you can run the screen at 75Hz for a bit. You prob can't do this at the full 1920 x 1200 res though.

Then see if this helps eliminate / reduce the black ghosting at all? In theory running the screen outside it's optimum refresh rate of 60Hz can impact the overdrive application of the panel, and so this might reduce the overshoot artefacts people are seeing

give it a go if you can and let me know :)

What kind of timeframe can we expect a fix for this to take? Is it something that could take months to fix and ship out or can they just to a quick firmware update?

if the banding issue on the 2407WFP original version is anything to go by, i'd expect mayb a firmware fix within a month....depends how quickly they come up with a way to fix it though!

Mine arrived this morning and the ghosting is unbelievable...

Tried all the tweaks, some helped a little but didnt get rid of it.

Its going back on monday and I just ordered a samsung 226bw

I'm sorry for those stuck with monitors, dell will sort it out though just takes time.I picked up an a04 2407wfp for £385 inc vat, delivery, 0 dead pixel guarentee and 4 year warranty, can't wait should be with me tomorrow.

I'm still puzzled by all this i do not have any ghosting issues, found this on AV Forums more details info courtesy in part from Anandtech;

Only the purple snakes can be eradicated by adjusting the RGB colours.
The ghosting problems(http://youtube.com/watch?v=V1mN6lYAJzE) is on ALL (A00 revision) 24" HC versions Dell screens and it won't go away not matter what you do. It may appear less or more accordng to your settings. There is a long thread on dells community website http://www.dellcommunity.com/support...cending&page=1
plus more about it on other major and highly reputable forums.

From AnandTech forum: This monitor does have some issues with ghosting as discussed in this thread. The response time control (overdrive) is poorly controlled causing bright halos around moving objects. It may not occur as badly with different settings and the amount of ghosting depends on the color transition involved. If you're a big gamer you should probably avoid this monitor or wait for a new revision. The effects aren't as annoying for general usage or watching movies.

Leave your monitor on for 1-2 hours to warm up and then you will see that this issue exhibits a black after shadow from bright spots (over 75% brightness) in dark areas (under 40% brightness), it leaves a very dark sometimes black after shadow that lasts from 100-300ms.

Basically what’s happening is that after a bright pixels trys to switch to a darker colour, it overcompensates and switches to a colour that’s too dark and it takes between 100-300ms for it to settle onto the right brightness.

This means the issue is non-existent with white-to-black transitions, but white to dark grey, say RGB(64,64,64), will cause the displays pixels to switch from white to black, then to the correct grey some time later. The result is a displeasing dark shadow trailing behind bright objects moving across a dark-but-not-black background."

This issue has been acknowledged from Dell and now we are all waiting for an official responce from them. Should everything go according to common sense business tactits we should be able under the guarantee to exchange our monitors for the new revision ones that should come out in couple of months(hopefully). Till then we either send the monitors back and request a refund or simply wait till Dell have fixed it.
