thinking of getting a new monitor.

purely for gaming, mainly racing games like iracing and bf3.

what would be the best path to take 120hz or get a higher res monitor like 2560x1440???

what would show the biggest difference or enhance my gaming the most?

im not fussed on the 3d at all...

cheers...

Racing games for the most part don't benefit hugely from 120Hz - they will probably be a little more responsive over your average 60Hz/IPS panel but nothing significant - the higher resolution tho often sets them off nicely visually.

BF3 will be a different story - you'd benefit fairly significantly from a 120Hz panel there if your anything other than a very casual gamer.

I guess it depends a lot on what you play the most.

well i go through stages im massively into iracing atm so thats all im playing and im abit fed up of bf3 but it will be the opposite again soon probably...

Definately 120hz over higher res, sooooo much better for gaming - looking forward to the days when there will be 1440p panels at 120hz though (/me dreams...)

I bought a Dell U2711 for many reasons including gaming. I think its great for gaming, the resolution is lovely and I still have no problem killing all the whining kids on MW2/3. Not only is the panel great but the stand is just pure quality. Its the only monitor I've had where the manufacture has actually spent for than £1.50 on the stand and non of my other screens were cheap.

I just had this dilemma... ended up going for Dell U2711 - I want the extra screen real estate for when I'm working from home + just general browsing etc...

If it had been purely for gaming, I think I would have gone for 120Hz... but it would have been more than that as I'm guessing the 120Hz monitors aren't quite up to the IQ/colours of screens like the U2711 yet - so that would have been an important consideration for me. Don't need accuracy, just like it.

Already had shipping notification - get it tomorrow :)

I am also getting a new monitor soon. I am the same dilemma right now. I am a BF3 gamer but I have never played on a monitor higher than 75hz so dont have a clue what a 120hz would be like. I have tried high res screens though and I love them so it is a hard choice. My main options are the BenQ XL2420T ( Graveyard would like some input) and the Samsung SyncMaster SA850.

IMO higher res is better for working (more desk space).

Faster screens are better for fast paced gaming.

I LOVE my 27inches of 120Hz gaming goodness.

In an ideal world 30inches of 1600p 120Hz would be ideal but its some way off.

2560x1440!!!

120hz monitors are just pointless tack unless you're a competitive gamer (by competitive i mean for example: cs/css players that play in tournaments and actually have a prospect of getting a decent placing.....or similar) God knows how people can cope with such drab washed out colours, once you go IPS you don't go back.

I bought a 120hz monitor recently, had it for 24 hours, played around with it on some fast paced FPS games, but to be honest the benefit was no where near worth the cost, IPS on the other hand....image quality is well worth the cost! To think i had actually boxed up my hazro hz27WC ready to sell....ended up returning the 120hz on DSR and unpacking the hazro again :p

Not true at all... even if you're not a competitive gamer, FPS games just feel so, so much better on a 120Hz. You probably didn't even calibrate your 120Hz properly, because once you've done that the colours and contrast is actually pretty damn good.

Calibration on a TN monitor, little more than polishing a turd in my eyes.

What makes me laugh is i bought one on the premise that lots of people i played css with told me "it feels better", a very vague term..... it just feels a bit smoother in fast movements, something that doesn't feel necessarily bad on any 60hz TFT to be honest. Not at all worth the £150+ price tag they're given over a standard TN screen. (even bigger leap when you're talking 27")

At least with an IPS screen the benefit is seen in every aspect of use, certainly feels like you get more for your money :)

Stick a well calibrated 120Hz panel next to an IPS panel straight out of the box and you'll eat your words ;)

There's a 120Hz IPS panel coming soon though - should be good :D

A TN panel can never compete with IPS on that scale... it's physically impossible.

See now 120hz IPS i'd like to see :D Though only if it's 27" and once that happens it'll be WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY out of my price range :p

I am probably one of the few people on these forums who has done just that with several different models. The issue Xeanor was probably picking up on was the term "washed out" to describe the colours on the TN panel. This is ambiguous and misleading. "Washed out" should be a term used to described the relative saturation (or lackthereof) of certain colours (or how much they 'pop' to use a more common phrase). This depends largely on the screen surface and the colour gamut of the backlight and has very little to do with the panel type. The shade variety and consistency of colours, however, is a significant and obvious difference between the two panel types.

And incidentally, there is no 120Hz IPS panel coming soon.

My new BenQ XL2420T colours aren't far off my HP LP2475w and both are calibrated well.TN panels have actually been a lot better now than the past few years.

I would never go back to 60hz for gaming but then again i play a lot of fps games but people who do not play them as much i can see why they going for higher resolution instead of the 120hz.

Depends on what you want to use it for really, either way both are nice to have.
