2560x1440 or 120hz monitor???

Calibration on a TN monitor, little more than polishing a turd in my eyes.

What makes me laugh is i bought one on the premise that lots of people i played css with told me "it feels better", a very vague term..... it just feels a bit smoother in fast movements, something that doesn't feel necessarily bad on any 60hz TFT to be honest. Not at all worth the £150+ price tag they're given over a standard TN screen. (even bigger leap when you're talking 27")

At least with an IPS screen the benefit is seen in every aspect of use, certainly feels like you get more for your money :)

I have had a non-TN for years and years, I was curious about the 120Hz but I knew most TN panels were abyssmal colour-wise.

Once I had connected it and moved my mouse cursor in windows, I was already amazed. I started up BF3 and lowered the settings a bit to hit 120fps average and I was flabbergasted.

Now, I do care about the colours and all, and if they were really really crappy, I would've stuck with 60Hz and proper colours, but they are actually really decent, so decent in fact that I have not considered going back to 60Hz for even a second.

I will stick with 120Hz TN until the day either IPS or some new technology comes along with 120Hz with very nice colours too. Until then, 120Hz TN without a doubt for me. Then again, I don't do anything with photography or video editing, I just game a lot. If I'd do photography, I wouldn't get a 120Hz TN.

$1400 though... so at a guess £1200-1400... yeah, I'm not going to be queueing up to buy one!

Neither of those are 120Hz. They have been discussed on these forums so there is no need to point to external websites. They are 60Hz and use passive 3D technologies - that shouldn't come as a surprise to anybody familiar with LGs current 3D technology. The Mitsubishi is restricted to the Asian market and uses frame interpolation like a TV would - no actual 120Hz output there.

Fair play, I read 3D IPS and assumed 120Hz IPS.

That's understandable. It's what most people think and then horrible people like me dash their hopes. :(

Better finding out beforehand than buying one and being disappointed!

Meh, my U2711 isn't even delivered til tomorrow, so it's not like i'll be looking for a new screen any time soon anyway :) Plenty of time for things to improve... I have a Panny 50" GT30 for 3D... just would have been nice to see the improved refresh rate for normal use.

Sure thing.

But I'd class those as for two different usage scenarios... what do you intend to use the monitor for?

Obviously, if you want 3D... then you have to get the Sammy.

If it's mostly FPS games you play, then you may get a slight improvement... but it would be subjective.

If you're going to use it for work, general browsing, other games (without 3D ofc) like RTS, image editing, video work... go for the Dell.

The only reason to choose the samsung (especially when it's more expensive than the Dell!) is if you either want 3D or think you could benefit from 120Hz for the majority of the monitor's use. As a compromise, you'll get less screen real-estate and worse image quality.

None of this will give you a reasonable impression of one over the other as I don't have experience of a 120Hz panel, just experience with quite a few TN 60Hz panels (as well as PVA and IPS, I once had 3x 30" Dells - i miss them a bit)...

I say further up it was a "dilemma"... it wasn't really, no brainer for my use.

Well i'm after using it for Xbox Gaming only via HDMI,wasn't sure if to go for the 1920x1080 Sammy or the Dell with the higher res,i've been trawling the net for 2 weeks now and still can't decide!!!!

My Samsung 2233RZ with calibration is acceptable - its no IPS but no one would seriously call it dull, lifeless or washed out with proper settings, deep blacks, sharp image and respectably colorful. Contrast/saturation could probably do with a little work but aside from the dithering which is only really apparent on extreme gradiants or if you really really look for it theres nothing objectionable about it.

For gaming tho its a huge advantage - what happens in game feels far closer to my input/what I was trying to make happen, far far less times when I'm thinking "I should have made that shot", etc. with the result that I consistantly double my KDR when playing games like COD and Quake on it compared to any 60Hz panel I've ever tried and I've tried a fair few. The other noticeable thing and the real reason I went for 120Hz tho is that the image stabalises so much quicker - pull a fast 180degree view change and even on the best 60Hz panel it takes a lot longer for the pixels to adjust to the correct colors resulting in some blurring/residual image issues which delay how quickly and efficently you can react to whats going on ingame - if you've been playing awhile your brain automatically compensates for it (with a reduction in efficiency) if you've just come from playing on a CRT or spend awhile playing on a CRT/120Hz TFT and go back to a 60Hz panel its very apparent.

So it's only going to be connected to your Xbox? Not going to be used for general PC use / anything else?

Then you'll never see any real benefit from a 120Hz monitor... most X360 games run at 30FPS.

For your other use, you'll definitely see an improvement from the extra resolution & imo, the improved colours will make the X360 games look nicer.

The scaler is supposed to be good in the dell and the dell is currently £50 cheaper than the sammy.

In your position, I would definitely take the U2711.

Well thanks for the advice, going to go with the Dell, started off with that as My first choice and then read reviews on other screens and after all that back to the Dell:D

Yeah 120Hz not very useful for console gaming as your not turning on mouse so view changes aren't as rapid (generally) so residual image and overall responsiveness is less of an issue.

well i got my 120hz monitor today..

Damn its so much nicer playing on this, every thing is so so smooth..

bf3 was like a different game and i racing was just so fluid...

loving it...

except for the dead pixels...

I think people convince themselves things are so much smoother at 120hz after shelling out the dough, i couldnt see a whole lot of difference myself when I bought a Alienware 120hz monitor, it was great quality but I couldnt take the colour quality loss over my PVA.

Sold it after a month and have since moved up to a 27" 2560x1440 which is just the best monitor ive ever owned.

I really wanted 120hz to be great but for me, it wasnt.

i havent convinced myself of any thing ive had my 60hz asus monitor and this benq 120hz monitor right next to each other to compare them and the 120hz monitor i defo a lot smoother than the 60hz full stop for me...

Its like night and day for me - I've tested it a fair amount - I have both monitors hooked up to the same PC and I can play 10 games of COD in a row on the 60Hz and at best get half the KDR I will get on average playing 10 games on the 120Hz.

I don't actually notice it being _that_ much smoother in operation tho it is a little, but the difference in response and reduced residual image issues make a big difference to how well I do in games.
