Im going to take a punt and say that you wont need 8c/16t for at least 2-3 years after the next gen consoles have released. 6/12 will be fine for years. Most games will still be cross-gen with PS4/Xbox One until 2023ish, the first wave of games will just be souped up PS4 games until they start specifically programming for the next gen consoles and ditch last gen ones.Consider this folks. The end of this year will see the new consoles released and the 6 core processors will be 2 cores short and a few threads.
We all know that console game development dictates PC and you would want more power than a console due to running Windows and background tasks.
I have 8700k, 2600 and 2600x. I will most likely upgrade those to Ryzen 8 core chips as the value for money is great.
