290 or 970?

14.9
Also, it's obviously the GFX score you wanna look at. Even at 5Ghz, my cpu isn't going to compete with decently clocked Ivy, haswell etc, never mind X79/99.

Well the fact is that Ranger gets ice building up in his system res because it is that cold where he is, so I expect he can push it more than the general populace, so comparing his score with that of a air cooled 970 is pretty pointless to me.

I can't see the OP sticking his computer in the freezer to try and match that kind of temp :D

We have palm trees and sunny beaches here.

there's an English expression called flogging a dead horse.

I think you've discovered it for yourself. Comparing clock speeds across architecture is barrel scraping :)

Like I told the OP he needs to patient and see where the prices end up in the next week or so,especially with the game bundle worth £20 to £30,and the big drops in some of the R9 290X cards recently. Even that £230 R9 290 card is closer to £200 especially with what one of the three games included,ie, Alien:Isolation is selling for on MM(around £20 to £24),so if it drops further, that makes the card essentially under £200.

You are already starting to see drops in a few other R9 290 cards now at other retailers below that (as Gibbo mentioned himself),so I expect OcUK will try and beat them.

Actually has anyone asked what rig the OP has ATM??

I was looking through their history to see what they have and there is mention of them having a GTX670.

In that case, wouldn't it just make more sense for them to get another GTX670 for a SLI setup if they have a compatable motherboard??

2 weak ass GPUs in SLI? Id rather take the 970 any day.

Except GTX670 cards cost much less secondhand now, especially with the fact the newer cards have made prices tumble.

Like under £100 on the famous auction site.

Instead of sticking with another lot of 28NM cards,it would tide them over until we see 20NM/16NM GPUs in another year or so,and second generation DX12 cards which will perform much better in DX12 games.

No,what I am saying is most people stick to whatever stock cooling comes with their card, and the closest they would ever probably get to water cooling of any sort is the AIO water coolers from companies like Asustek.

Anyway,at least from the OP I don't get the idea the OP is going for anything like a water cooling setup for their PCs though,so its a moot point. If he was that bothered to spend £100s of quid on such a setup I don't think he would really be caring about a potential £60 to £80 differences in price,or even saving a few quid here or there on a PSU(not that it is needed).

I see, so (no offence intended) your reply isn't really relevant to my post then as you're talking about something different lol.

How many like me have moved from a water cooled, 1250Mhz 290 to a 970 and then 970 SLI?

I have no regrets at all in the move over and would recommend anyone with a 290 to move to a 970 if they can.

I moved from a water cooled 1215Mhz GTX780 straight to GTX970 SLI, it's sort of close. My temps are pretty much the same lol.

Just under 1600mhz eh.. Nice. Is that good for 24/7 use?

Either way, all this only goes to show that's there's barely anything in it in the real world.
I don't even remember what this was all about anyway tbh :D

@almighty15
The 970 is a great card, but it's still a sidegrade unless there are features that you absolutely must have.

Does not seem much in it between the 290P and 970. 6 of one and half a dozen of the other as far as features are concerned depending on what the OP would find more useful. Power consumption on the 970 is better as already said. One thing I would make sure if I was going for a 290P/290X now would that it's a custom cooler one like the Tri-x, Vapor-x, Powercolor PCS as they run cool and quiet compared to the ref design even when overclocked.

Here's my updated score using the 14.9.1 drivers, 1225/1650 on Vapor-x 290P for ref. As I am using Windows 10 preview its coming up "time measurement data not available" though.
