290 or 970?

Just look at the pluses and minuses for both.

AMD 290

Pluses
£230 price (cheapest)
Mantle in Thief/BF4/Sniper Elite V3 maybe one more but coming in other games as well (adds slightly more frames to games)
TruAudio in a couple of games (Thief and Lichdom)
GVR (records gameplay)
Free games
Overclocks fairly well

Minuses
heat (will get hot and will heat your case up(needs good case air flow))
Power draw (uses a fair chunk more power than other GPUs)

GTX 970

Pluses
PhysX in 44 games (adds extra pretties to games)
GameWorks games you get ALL the benefit and not just some
ShadowPlay (records gameplay)
DSR (allows you to upscale a game to 4K resolution)
Overclocks very well
runs very cool and quiet

Minuses
Not as cheap as it should be (£260 cheapest)
No free games
Not much extra voltage available to play with

There will be more but as you have no intention of swapping monitors, it seems silly to mention G-Sync and I am sure we can split hairs on those but they are generally what is what.

Thanks that is really helpful. Because I will be gaming at 1080p it seems likely that I will be running most games above 60fps. I could use some of that excess power to run DSR. What are people's opinions on it? Is it a noticable improvement?

If you buy a card to OC you buy a 980 1500mhz or more is fun no doubt.
still wont sell my 290 for such or the power feature.

I think people sometimes forget a single 290 or such is way more people need for single screen gaming nowadays. I use one for eyefinity.

You'd think 3 months would give your ego a rest.
So for a 290 to compete at a gaming level (24/7 stable) you need to flash to the asus bios, unlock silly voltage, hope your card has decent silicon and shove 1.5v through the chip (water only, preferable chilly weather from Norway) just to compete with a 970 boosting to 1500core using stock voltage.

past 1250 it usually gets tough with the voltage, you dont really need that much to get 1200-1250 with a decent chip. And at that point it will beat some 970s and get beaten by some 970s. Depending on the game, resolution and what clocks the 970 is running.

I was talking from a benchmarking perspective.

You should have seen by now that it old OP multiple times to get whatever becuase both cards run games well lol

Here's a 970 that boosts to 1513/8040 vs the 1225/1600 290 previously posted in this thread. 290p drivers are relatively new.

I know the clocks arent EXACTLY what you wanted, but its as close as i could get them searching for 5 minutes.

Does this make my claim a bit more realistic?

Don't be silly, that 290's at 1225/1600. That 25 on the core will make good bit of difference. Did you not see the comparisons I posted before they got deleted?

Theres more than enough information in this thread as well as the rest of the posts for the OP to make an informed decision now.

I think it's time the thread was closed before people get banned :D

Yea but not 600-700 point bit of difference.

Anways THATS IT FOR ME. For REAL this time. Bye, good luck op.

But yet you needed to dig around to find those results showing the 970 losing out to the 290, and my results came from the in house FS thread we have running here that showed the 290 getting wasted by the 970.

At OP, Gregster pretty much says it all really. Just choose what suits your needs, if only gaming at 1080p, 290 or 970 will both be more than you need. My experience with my 290 is excellent, no problems with heat but I agree good case cooling is important, if your case is an ordinary air shifter then I would lean towards the 970, if its good then the 290. Depends what features you prefer from each card really. :)

Well said and good honesty from someone who uses a 290 :)

@ the OP

As for DSR, I have never used it but anyone who has will probably miss your question in this sea of arguments comparing e-peen sizes.

I wouldn't say folk we're exactly arguing, just protecting the Op! from being misinformed.

I'm also not comparing my virtual penis, rather my actual 2inch dong.
Needs all the help it can get, little fellow.

Well the fact is that Ranger gets ice building up in his system res because it is that cold where he is, so I expect he can push it more than the general populace, so comparing his score with that of a air cooled 970 is pretty pointless to me.

I can't see the OP sticking his computer in the freezer to try and match that kind of temp :D
