3090 Worth it Over the 3080??

A 3090FE inside my PC is definitely worth it over a 3080FE I can't buy at all.

Seeing the scalper prices that the AIB 3080's are going for a 3090 isn't much worse value than those, to be honest.

This was the logic that saw me on the path to a 3090FE too...

That and if I ascribed a monetary value to my time wasted trying to get a unicorn 3080FE the 3090FE becomes a veritable bargain.

Still a stupid bloody card

I'm not making any assumptions about resale either because I think we're heading into a new GPU arms race and it may not age that well.

@OP you bought it as you could not get a 3080FE same as many here as you said above but you did not look at benchmarks before hand like last year?

I bought one as I wanted one over a 3080FE (not launch as I was going to skip this gen esp. after that balls-up launch) as I want the best and I do not want less VRam than my last 2 GPU's and it does run cooler/quieter then the 3080FE as triple slot with bigger fans and again easier to get.

My 1080FE+Titan Xp (2017) basically paid for it.

IMO you have buyers remorse...

Really? Thought a 2080ti would be fine with FS as you don't need high fps? Is cpu holding it back, sry can't see sig.
Cpu a 8700k at around 5GHz

But even all the reviews only get around 25fps to 30fps at 4k with 2080ti

I agree you no need very high fps in a flight sim but i do feel having higher then 25fps to 30fps would be much better

Not sure who mentioned Flight Sim but that is more about a powerful CPU.

It's both tbh, especially in VR but also true for 4k.

Below 4k, then yeah the CPU more likely to be limiting (although they continue to try and improve the mainthread bottleneck so may see this change over time as really it's specifically a mainthread limitation rather than a total cpu power limit).

Its a gpu killer for sure, and can use more than your (very fast) 6 cores. If its any consolation even my 10 cores @ 5ghz+/3080 combo is brought to its knees flying over NYC fully cranked at 4K. Looks bloody brilliant all the same ;)

OP - just keep it.

I plan on keeping my 3090FE for 3-4 years (same as I did with 1080Ti).

Plus, if DLSS really takes off and improves even further, could well last longer.

Oops, typo. Updated, yes I bought a 3090. Just trying to decide if to resell the 3090 and buy a 3080, or just keep it.
Just keep the 3090. AIB 3080s are not going for much less and the 3080FE is extremely difficult to get, not worth the stress in my opinion if you can afford the 3090. Also, you can always sell the 3090 for more money when it's time to upgrade. The cooler on the 3090FE is amazing in both noise and temperature too, probably the best 3090 cooler overall whereas the 3080FE cooler is just very good.

3090 isn't worth it if you can get an 3080FE. However 3090FE vs an overpriced 3080 AIB isnt a bad deal.

Having said that if you get a 3090FE you're likely to not lose any money on it at resale for quite some time.

I don't get why the last sentence would be true. Gauranteed to lose half it's value by end of year imo. As prices go towards normality there might be a 3080Ti coming which will demolish the 3090 price.

How long will that take though? It may be at least another year, Brexit is getting worse not better and the extra VRAM and better cooler means the 3090FE should hold it's value reasonably well. Then OP can sell the 3090 and get a 4080 if they want to.

What a 3080Ti going to cost though? 850-900 from Nvidia and 1k+ from an AIB. So shouldn't be a disaster.

At 4k max settings my 5950+rtx3090 is also brought down to earth in flight sim over New York City - hitting mid 40s to mid 50s - don't think anyone can run this game at locked 60fps yet

I've just made the jump from a 3080 to a 3090. Ended up getting the TUF 3090 for £1650 which is obviously crazy but by todays standards not so much. It's nice to be able to play Cyberpunk with ultra RT and quality DLSS and still be able to play the game but ultimately I know its pretty frivolous. If you have money to spare and wont miss it I would say go for it but only if you are not going to miss it.

 are you joking. Have you not heard of depreciation?
As soon as gpus get flooded to the market and if or when the 4 Series GPUs come out, anyone who paid scapled prices will take a huge loss on depreciation!

I.e. pay £2500 for a 3090, in 6months to 1year it will cost £1700 , if those 4 series cards come out, your 3090 will probably cost £1000 and that depends on the price of those 4 series cards. If they are priced similar to the 3 series cards, you would end up loosing 70% of what you paid, so your £2500 card will cost like £750 come resale.

I paid retail for my 3090 £1399. Worse case depreciation is imo if 4XXX cards come in two years and the 4070 at £500 outperforms the 3090 in games, then its resale is around £400 for simplicity. That's £1000 in two years.

Obviously lots of factors such as gpu supply, actual performance of the 4XXX, inflation to factor in.

Edit: Also if the 3080ti drops at £900, its gonna be close to the 3090 performance wise. Could also heavily impact resale.

IF a 3080Ti drops do you seriously think it will be easy to buy one as it will be scalped in 5mins so enjoy your 3090FE for now the same as I am till a 3090Ti (September IMO for any refresh including a 3080Ti but the lack of Vram issue may hasten this) or eventually the 4000 series appears.
