3090 Worth it Over the 3080??

Is the 3090 worth it over the 3080?

No, even Elon Musk would baulk at the tiny uptick in performance for double or even triple the cost of a 3080. It’s a very very bad deal for gamers.

However the current gpu pricing situation and availability is making a 3090fe seem like a cracking deal....

Yeah Elon Musk, who charges $10k to unlock self driving sensors every Model 3 ships with, that Elon Musk?

I do want to keep it. But when I look at it logically, 20% performance for over double the cost it makes it seem overpriced lol.

Yep, the 3080 FE is harder to get, sells out so fast.

Should have waited for the 3080ti, that should be out soon and will be the sweet spot.

Putting aside all current issues getting cards due to all reasons, a Ti normally would be about 12 months after its predecessor so if you got a 3000 series on launch in September 2020 you would be waiting till Sep 2021 so 1 year on a Ti, so depending on what card you had and could you wait or not, buy what you can when you can if you need it.

980ti and 1080ti were 9-10 months after the 980-1080, but the 2080ti was released within a week of the 2080
rumours are currently that the 3080ti is going to be April, so 7 months

Hence I said about as in approx./nearly :).

AFAIR the 1080 to 1080Ti (a decent upgrade) were about 10 months apart, the 2000 series was disaster I was never going to touch the the launch and the Super and Ti fiasco.

There was rumours about a 3080Ti coming soon due to the Ramsgate issue (lack of Vram) but then it was said it was not coming and postpone/cancelled due to possibly lack of Cores from Samsung and GDDR6X issues and supply..

Yeah but then you also said we'd be waiting till September for the 3080ti, but current rumours are April

To make a 3080Ti it will be very near the 3090 memory aside so not sure what they are playing at, the 3090 also is not a full fat chip so there could be a 3090Ti, but in this current climate none of the 3000 series will be easy to get now and for some time.

I am going by what I read and past releases, nobody but Nvidia knows for sure and if you get one released so early it is for the wrong reasons (the 3080 Vram or lack of it) and will upset some 3080/3090 buyers like the 2080S and 2080Ti did.

Do you own a 3080 or 3090?

Not currently, normally I get a new card on launch day and have always been lucky on the F5 war, but this time I didn't bother as I'd just bought a new VR headset, but then I only just started looking in earnest the last week or so and it looks like cards are popping up almost daily but just at really weird times so I've just missed out so far

If I manage to get a 3080 and then the 3080ti comes out I'll just nab one of them aswell and either give the 3080 to my son or sell it, its not like I would be losing any money on it at the moment. We've got a 2080ti and a 1080ti at the moment so we'd get back a couple hundred less than what we'd pay out for upgrading both assuming 2nd hand prices stay bonkers.

The 3090 is barely cut down though, it’s 10496 vs 10752 shaders which is only just over 2% less... even if it scaled perfectly that’s basically nothing. As such I can’t see a 3090Ti unless process maturity is allowing higher clocks at lower voltages, but I could see a Titan which has both the full fat chip and the pro driver support.

3080Ti is interesting... the better option IMO would be to leave all memory busses enabled and go with 12Gb. The other option of keeping the narrower bus and going for 20Gb likely only really has the advantage of winning the PR war with AMD’s 16gb cards.

I have been convinced from the start that we’ll see a 3080Ti, only question to me is when. I personally put my bet on a 12gb 3080Ti falling somewhere not too far behind the 3090 in gaming perf, probably releasing by the summer but I wouldn’t be entirely surprised to see 20Gb just to win the spec war.

Of course actually buying one will be a whole other kettle of fish!
