£3500 budget...(is this achievable?)

Worth trying to find an E46 328Ci?

Going on from my thread of posh/comfy car for <£5k. Thought about a X-Type and S-Type but I loved my old E36 328 so was wondering what peoples thoughts were on an E46 328Ci?

:(

I came in here expecting to see something with an early Chevy V8 :(

Maybe finned rocker covers and a trio of 97's.

Stick to the X Type plan :)

Bah, I'm so conflicted! lol

2001 though :( Wahh!

The "Is buying a cheap, relatively modern BMW a good idea?" subject has been covered in great depth lately:

Just in case you can't be bothered to read those threads, the answer is "No" :).

Kind of looking 99/00 - so not very 'modern', still over 10 years old.

This is slightly different to other old BMW threads in that you don't appear to be trying to buy one from the bottom of its respective market - that is to say that £3.5k should offer you the pick of the more decent E46 328Ci's and you are right to think this is 328Ci money not 330Ci money.

However the rest still applies - it'll break, and cost money. But if you are one of those who would rather pay to fix a good car than drive a reliable crap one, you can do worse.

The E46 328Ci is affected by the subframe tearing issue, so check for this.

Thanks! Yes, I am aware of this subframe issue and have subsequently found this one: http://pistonheads.com/sales/2120210.htm

I understand that it may break and may cost money; saying that my E36 328 was reliable for the year aside from just the passenger side window motor breaking.

I would also consider an E46 325 if I'm being honest. Is there a huge difference performance wise? I remember my E36 328 being pretty nippy for a heavy car.

EDIT: Scratch that! A 325 is £150 more to insure than a 328! Wow, really is evidence of how insurance works right there! 323 then? lol

Its one of those unknown manuals.

You reckon dealer? Trying to arrange a viewing now.

It was just my impression of reading the advert.

Ask him about "the car" rather than "The BMW", it soon flushes out if he has more than one car for sale.

He may well be who he claims to be....

Going to view this tomorrow. Anyone got any E46 specific things to check or any tips/thoughts on this car in particular?

Cheers lads, much appreciated!

did you buy it? :p

Yes. :)

Got it for a freakin' steal as well. Awesome condition, had the rear subframe replaced by BMW in 2008 with 5 year warranty. New water pump not long ago, BMW FSH, all previous MOTs with advisories (nothing major).

Well chuffed! :D
