Yeah you should be able to I mean I've got a 1070 with a Ivy Bridge i5 and I only bottleneck in BF 1 sometimes, if you get a 7700k it'll hold up for at least 3 years, I feel that waiting for Zen+ is going to be easy :)

Think about it 7700k is fast IPC + overclocks better than what I've got along with 4 extra threads.

With respect the 1080ti is a different beast compared to the 1080ti. Your i5 will certainly hold it back.

Oh yeah it will hold back a 1080ti but a 7600k wouldn't. Is what I'm trying to say is a 7700k will be fine for at least 3+ years of gaming at a high level.

The 7600k will also. There are games that are pegging the 7700k to 100% usage. This will only get worse as newer games come out.
If buying a new CPU now, its ryzen or wait for coffeelake in my opinion. Quads are showing their age now.

Wait for Zen+ is the best option :)

I went from a 980Ti to a 1080Ti while using a 1440p/60Hz IPS panel and a 3770k. Very happy with my noticable decision both in performance and heat output. I do want a high end Ryzen NOW but trying to hold out until the next node shrink(and having an actual need for it).

Gaming and work which is developing (boring business systems) mostly in Visual Studio is great with this old beast -

3770k @ 4.5.
Noctua NH-D14.
GA-Z77X-D3H Motherboard.
32GB of DDR3.
EVGA 1080Ti FTW3.
750W XFX PSU.
Sandisk Ultra II 480GB SSD.
Sandisk X300 512GB SSD.
2 x WD Black 1TB.
DVD Writer.
HAF XB (Dremel'd to improve airflow and fit a magnetic dust filter).
2 x Noctua AF-140 fans.
Noiseblocker 120 fan.
USB Bitfenix Recon fan contoller with sensor placed inside 1080Ti heatsink.
USB Oculus Rift + 2 sensors, wil decide on 3rd / 4th after moving office/bedroom.
USB 3.0 card PCI-X 4 port/4 controllers (dedicated to the Rift).
USB 2.0 card PCI-E 7 port/1 controller.
USB Hauppage HDsolo TV Tuner.
USB Gamecom 788 7.1 headphones.
USB MS Lifecam.
USB Strafe RGB MX silent.
USB Logitech G502.
USB Xbox controller.
USB UPS.
USB barcode reader cradles x 2.
2 free front facing intel USB 3.0 ports for removable storage.

I don't have to worry about water leaks!

£600 for a months worth of hookers, booze and drugs?

£600 would last 2 hours at best, where does one get such a good deal as your housemate?

I finally got the 1080ti and it's working fine with the 3770k at 4.5. To be honest i've only played Assetto Corsa and Project Cars recently.

Running hardware monitor and it seems to peak at 71-75% max utilisation, so i'm happy for now. Until i start to see it close in on the 90's%, i'll stick it out. For sure Ryzen makes sense, but let's see what Intel bring to the table.

A 3770k from a 2500k is a pretty nice upgrade, especially if you're playing games. The extra threads help lots, especially later on in the lifetime of the CPU.

I had a 2500k until I bought a used 3770k, I had stuttering on Battlefield 1 with the 2500k overclocked to 4.6ghz, I don't have stuttering anymore with the 3770k, It's worth the upgrade.

That applies to any silicon. Thing is, 2500k doesn't do PCIe Gen 3.

doesn't do DDR4 either or a host of other things.

the 2500K was and still is a very good CPU. it's only just starting to struggle and only with the most demanding of games. it could quite easily still do a lot of people who don't play those types of games for another 2-4 years.

as for extra threads, etc. i've went to a 7600K. which is basically the same chip just a lot newer. still 4 cores and 4 threads. seems to be beating off anything thrown at it comfortably.
