39 Bodies found in Lorry in Essex

I was rather under the impression that you are a committed Brexiteer? However, I am glad to see that in fact, you favour easier immigration :)

It seems slightly strange that there is still a question over what route this vehicle took, the entire country is covered with CCTV and ANPR cameras

I think you misunderstood his post tbh.

He's not favouring easier immigration at all, he seems to be advocating a zero tolerance policy to illegal immigrants.

Why would you enter the UK in Anglesey and drive to Essex if you don’t have anything to hide?

No, I mean the driver himself should've checked. Only 2 avenues he can go down really he didn't check which can bring up a manslaughter charge.

Is that the standard procedure these days - all drivers checking their truck before crossing? If so he's not got much excuse, either complicit in it or negligent.

I guess, given the fines in place for drivers who do take across migrants (whether unaware or not), they really ought to be checking each time. He's certainly got some questions to answer here.

Could the people not just by a plane ticket and stay illegally then, if they can afford to pay their smugglers?

They could if countries let them... but airlines would get fined AFAIK. I mean that is what seemed so farcical about Merkel and her "refugees welcome" nonsense - it isn't like she allowed them to just pay for a plane fare - instead they had to run a gauntlet through a bunch of other countries to get there and pay far more than the cost of a plane ticket to people smuggling gangs. Also meant that the people who were able to be "welcomed" in Germany and the rest of Europe were disproportionately the people who were least at risk in the first place - mostly fit, military aged young men. Of course a relative lack of women caused some obvious problems there too.

There was that really sad story too of the little toddler being washed up on the beach - though, counterintuitively, it was seemingly used by people in support of the policy that lead to his death in the first place... the family the little guy was from were already safely in Turkey, living in a house there but decided to chance it along with all the others following Merkel's call.

But no, they won't let them buy plane tickets (or indeed provide them for people who can't) - they've got to risk it all in unsafe boats/dinghies themselves.

There is Govt guidance for hauliers, yes

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/secure-your-vehicle-to-help-stop-illegal-immigration

But with stories like this https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news...r-migrant-stowaways-even-if-they-alert-police where the driver still got a £19,000 fine when he called the police after discovering them, I guess that doesn't help with enforcement.

If he knew they were inside the vehicle they most likely would have got out way before the 23rd, having already been in the country for 4 days (entered Holyhead on the 19th).
My initial thoughts too. I wonder if the trailer was sealed with a tag after they got in.

I guess it works both ways... he could have checked before getting to the UK.

If you can get let off by claiming you didn't know etc.. then there is less incentive to check in the first place. Or indeed a potential exploit for people actually complicit in people smuggling to use if/when caught.

Yep, he should have done, but like with all checks, they aren't infallible - ie: people can and do jump aboard at any time/place. Not necessarily inside the trailer, but anywhere underneath, 5th wheel area etc

Of course, it's not a get out of jail free card, but in the case above he wasn't caught, he actually phoned the police when he heard them banging. In this scenario you can see how a driver could be more inclined to just let them out than do the right thing and phone the police if he's still going to get fined.

So the lorry was registered in Bulgaria by a company owned by an Irish man. Just seems very fishy. After the England game and now this. Bulgaria is not being shown in a good light. Especially considering its EU member status.
