Hey.
Im looking at buying a new TV next week...and see a lot of 3D TV's hitting the shops. Do you thin this 3D thing is just a gimick...or do you think its the thing of the future?
I like to buy the latest and gretatest...but not sure about this 3D advancement at all. Cant really see me puting a pair of 3d specs on every time I want to watch TV/Movie...or game even.

While im here...whats best TV I can get for arround £1000 ish.

Cheers

It's too hard to say right now, but with Sky releasing their 3d channel next month, I'm sure things will take off. Sony's PS3 update will also be out next month which will turn it into a 3d bluray player and allow games to be played in 3d.

Your best bet is to go and preview a demo in a proper setup environment and see what you think. Although the 3d may be a gimmick to some, the 2d quality of some of the sets is absolutely amazing.

You can pick up a Samsung PS50C7000 which is a 50" 3D plasma for £1200 if you shop around online. It's a very nice set and also offers the 2d to 3d conversion on any program.

god damn..now youve thrown in a curve ball...'plasma' TV's. I was leaning towards the LED TV range without 3D for arround the 1000-1200 range.

if you buying a tv now, then yeh i would go and get a 3d one might as well. but if you already have a decent lcd tv then theres really no need to go out and get a new tele just for 3d.
especially when theres only one 3d bluray at the moment, and beware you will have to then buy the glasses to match what your watching. bluray uses shutter and sky 3d is using polarization - each one requiring a different pair of glasses to be worn.....as if it wasnt confusing enough!

yeh sure your probably get a pair with your device when brought, but what about other family members? its gonna get expensive....

with regards to tv's i know samsung have lead the lcd battle for a while but it seems with 3d tvs panasonic are getting the better reviews at present.

sonys 3d games are out, as long as you have firmware 3.30 it will work, ive just been playing motorstorm 3D, wipeout 3D and pain 3D the effect is awesome tbh  if i had the money now i would buy the pan 50VT20.

the only update the ps3 needs is for playing 3D bluray films which will be out later in the year.

It may be worth it but for the sake of your eye-sight, don't use/watch 3D too often, use it as you would - for example - the cinema. Tricking your eyes into viewing simulated 3D is completely alien to your eyes' and mind's functionality. That said, Red/Blue 3D is much less harmful to your eyes.

Saw a 3D set up in my local PC World, it was a real disappointment, you can see the flicker on the active glasses, the TV costs a bomb and then you have to buy more glasses for the rest of the family and then you have to buy a 3D Blu-Ray.

Its 3 or 4 years off of being a decent service at a decent price. My advice is save your money.

I got a Panny VT20 and am very pleased with the TV. Nothing really to watch in 3D apart from Sky's demo channel. Some of the loops are stunning, others not so.

Ultimately, I don't think 3D will make or break a programme but will enhance it!

3D cinema is IMO worth the extra, but for home use, the cost is outrageous. Better to wait for across the board standards and prices to decrease

that'll be the samsung, and i agree i can also see the screen flicker
I was in town in the Sony centre today and their 3d TV is personally a lot better, looks better picture and can't see the glasses flickering.

On the down side the glasses are £99

the problem with any 3D instore is fluoresent lights will interfear with the lenses and make them flicker, to get them working properly you need to turn them off which most stores dont/cant.

My understanding is the TV dictates the sort of glasses required. The Panasonic 50VT20 uses active shutter glasses and displays the Sky 3d channel just fine. Sky use side-by-side to transmit the picture.

I'm curious/worried about that last bit. Got any links or proof? Speaking anecdotally, anaglyph 3D makes me feel sick every time without fail and leaves a queezy feeling even after removing the glasses. Shutter glasses are fine even for extended lengths of time.

3d isn't a gimmick, but I wouldn't buy a tv yet. it will mature and prices will drop drastically.

Just look out how long HD took to catch on and how prices dropped.

i tested a £2000 samsung 3d tv this week - whilst i was originally not fussed about 3d either way, i have to say my experience has most defaintly made me NOT want a 3d tv in a long long time.

Gotta say if the content supports this I think it will be amazing!! Watched the Motorstorm PS3 demo and some vids in the sony centre very impressive!!

For gaming I can imagine things like Fifa 'Be a Pro' being superb in 3D, running at the goal in 3D and skinning John Terry would be immense!! Also I feel any well supported Call of Duty or Battlefield could be good, with the grenade spam in 3d from COD being too good!!

If you can afford it, then go for it but I'd just be prepared to be disappointed as soon as something new comes out, but if you are in that position you can probably buy a new tv. There doesnt seem to be any real 'standard' to it yet which worries me and Im looking at new TV under £1400 at the mo. Tried the Sony demo in JL but the demo loops of football were a bit crap, I think games were it shone. Motorstorm looked amazing but an extra £500+ more amazing? Not so sure yet.

Or get a new TV with a 5 year warranty and hopefully it will break in 4 years when there will be holo-tvs or something :)

I tried a 3D TV in a high street retailer (which admittedly might not have been well set up) playing Mosters vs Aliens, which seems to be the de-facto demo and giveaway. To me, it looked like the magazines I used to buy as a kid with 3D glasses; more like various planes if 2D images than a 3D image, like decoupage almost.

Certainly not something I'm interested in if this is as good as it gets at the moment.

Buy a good quality normal set IMO.

i agree with this 100%.....it really isnt 'all that' at the moment at all.
