"4870x2 reviews thread"

What a beast of a card. I have a mental image of a GTX280 being a massive monolithic 5.0 litre V8 of a card, whilst the 4870 and 4870X2 with their GDDR5 memory are frenetically over-tuned turbo-charged high revving nut cases of cards.

Odd. At least I don't see dead people.

I know what you mean and it's a pretty good anology. Brute force American muscle car vs Japanese high tuned.

Depends on what res you are running at though. Driverheaven review shows it been 10-64% quicker than crossfire 4870's at 2560 x 1600 with 8xaa and 16af.

On that basis, I think it is fulfilling the 15% boost claim.

I've always thought though that the 4870x2 is not necessary unless you are running above 1920 x 1200.

My single 4870 runs GRID at 1680x1050 max detail and aa on between 76-100 fps which is good enough for me.

Or it could the 1GB per GPU ? i really think 4870 1GB CF would close the gap some more.

Thats not TechPowerUP's preview.

Thats HardOCP's preview. :p

H**** have their review up people.

Yeah but since there are no 4870 1Gb cards out yet, the claims that a 4870x2 is 15% quicker than two 4870's in xfire is valid.

Nobody ever said which ones and you may well be correct that the 4870's are suffering from lack of memory.

PSU and Size

Ok I'm a old vet of OCing PCs then left the scene got married and spent money on house, decided to get back in and make a dream machine. Now I feel like a total n00b, the tech has moved on so much since my day.

I am thinking of getting a 4870x2 to go with my new system I am building but really need to know the length so I can get a good case and what kinda PSU do you guys think I should use? Any ideas?

LOL you could look at it that way :)

I have a Modular Coolermaster 850W waiting patiently to power a 4870x2 :)

LOL yah!....Maybe drivers?

It is the drivers imo , the R700's drivers are not finished yet, and the 8.7's wont have anything in them to do with it id have thought, as the cards not due till last week August/beginning Sept, where as the 8.7's are due around next week, they will have just added the R700's name into them so they can be installed on it.

Least it gives an indication of what we can expect when it gets its own proper drivers though i suppose, as even under drivers that have nothing to do with it its beating the 280's. :D

With mature drivers and final release cards with perhaps different bios these cards are gonna fly, once Rivatuner can be used to o/c them they should be crazy fast :D

I'd reckon it'll be good for those who prefer Nvidia too as I'd expect the GTX280 to have further price cuts arround Aug/Sept too, price cuts we'd no doubt have never had without the likes of the X2 coming out

This is so true. Im holding tight till next month.

Anandtech GRID results look a bit odd when compared to Sampsa's results.

thats loads of power with a beta drivers, but on 22" screen might be bit of overkill atleast till new titles are out "farcry2" and etc ..

funny thing no review said anything micro shuttering is it gone ?

Interesting results coming from this card - it does seem to be a bit of a beast :)

I agree with psychas that it seems overkill for anything less than 1920*1200, as with x-fire 4870s.

Anyway, more good solid competition from AMD, this time at the high end. We all know that competition is good for everyone!
