"4870x2 reviews thread"

Surely they'll be using the same? Plus as drivers get better so will both the cards at the same time. Theres more than Crysis the X2 looses out, pritty much all games until you get to really high res. But the X2 is faster in Vantage...

No they do not use the same code.
Do you really think that because it maybe using the same Cat 8.7 or what ever that a 1900xtx that using Cat 8.7 is running the same Code as a 4870 using Cat 8.7 ;)

Well, some games such as Grid and Age of Conan are much faster in the X2 than in CF, I think it all depends in the game in particular. Anyway this is only a preview and there is still a month from them to go out :)

Hold on I thought they where saying the 4870X2 was going to be 10% faster than CF 4870's, its totally the same apart from Crysis where the CF4870's are a tad quicker! Oh well makes me more pleased with my purchase :D

Read all the reviews... it's faster in more than Crysis according to a few tests.

The GPU's are the same but the communication is not & that's where the difference in driver has to be tuned.

Still cant see it pulling 10/15% quicker apart from in Grid and Vantage over CF4870's, the best new drivers will do, is put it back on par. Bit of a dissapointment unless your running very high res or you want CF 4870X2's.

Dissapointment is probably the wrong word (before I get shot down) it's still monster of a card. Its just the rumors that hyped it up a little

The 3870X2 didn't do much better than 2x3870 on its release at the time ether.

And if it shows better performance at higher res then that's an indication of cpu bottleneck.
These cards are more powerful so the bottleneck res is higher than before depending on the game.

I'm surprised at the tiny margin between the 4870x2 and 4870 in Crossfire.
I thought there would be a bigger difference between them.

Anandtechs power consumption test puts a 8800GTX at 256.2w and the 4870x2 at 406.9w

Now lets deal with the differential and with my power meter in the frame my system pulls 490w at load (everyting overclocked to the hilt of course :D) so that leaves my OCZ 600W with 600 - (490+150) = -40 !!! That 8800GTX in the test is probably stock clocked so allow 40w for that ... and I break even.

What's the likely outcome if I put one of these in my rig and overclock it to within an inch of its life ?

Considering these are previews, they look excellent! Definately seems like this will be my next card. I can imagine them being even faster after release once there are proper drivers.

Exciting stuff!

Projected price is apparently £349 which seems a pretty good price for the increase it brings over a gtx280. Quite possible when final reviews come the performance will be even better.

not bad but you really have to question all the pre-hype surrounding the 15% boost over 4870 crossfire.

i certainly don't feel any worse for going with my 4850 crossfire setup that's for sure - less cash, less power & similar performance.

Well all we have so far are early beta drivers with engineering sample cards, its very possible the final product could be 15% faster than 4870 crossfire. We won't know till then though.

Could there be 2 sample versions out seeing as HC,techreport & DH says they have 1GB per GPU, 2GB on the board & only AnandTech saying 512MB per GPU, 1GB on the board ? or AnandTech could have made an error.
As the GRID performance suggests 1GB per frame buffer, notice the 4870-512MB CF getting hammered at 2560x1600 which us 30" users no of all to well.

What a beast of a card. I have a mental image of a GTX280 being a massive monolithic 5.0 litre V8 of a card, whilst the 4870 and 4870X2 with their GDDR5 memory are frenetically over-tuned turbo-charged high revving nut cases of cards.

Odd. At least I don't see dead people.

Depends on what res you are running at though. Driverheaven review shows it been 10-64% quicker than crossfire 4870's at 2560 x 1600 with 8xaa and 16af.

On that basis, I think it is fulfilling the 15% boost claim.

I've always thought though that the 4870x2 is not necessary unless you are running above 1920 x 1200.

My single 4870 runs GRID at 1680x1050 max detail and aa on between 76-100 fps which is good enough for me.
