4K gaming possible at full settings on todays hardware?

I've never seen Apple's displays with dynamic contrast ratio… It's fixed. The thick CCFL's were roughly 700:1 and the current LED are 1000:1.

Dynamic contrast would be very tiring on the eyes.

In the Anandtech review of the apple thunderbolt display, they specifically mention turning off the dynamic contrast for testing as it defaults to on, on both this and the previous cinema display model

Back on topic. I have been doing some single card testing.

Done 2 games and aiming for that 60 fps magical number and on a single card, it is surprisingly easy. AA sure is a crippler on performance and in honesty, the 2 games I have tested, it isn't that noticeable from on to off. If you are in a static image, you can see edges when it is off but they are very very faint and not at all off putting. I don't tend to stand about in games as well, and moving about is fluid and smooth.

Anyway, so far on a single Titan (at stock clocks) and a 3930K at 4.625Ghz:

Bioshock infinite

Ultra - 21 minimum - 50 average - 77 maximum
Very high - 30 minimum - 50 average - 74 maximum (no idea why that is)
High - 31 minimum - 63 average - 95 maximum

It is worth noting that on high settings, it looked just as good as ultra but came with screen tear and would need V-Sync to be applied to stop it. The game was smooth on ultra but those minimums could be an issue. I would run the game on high with V-Sync enabled and it will be a great looking game which is very smooth and very playable.

Batman Arkham Origins

Ultra with 8XMSAA - 19 minimum - 23 average - 52 maximum
Ultra with 2XMSAA - 31 minimum - 40 average - 49 maximum
Ultra with 0XMSAA - 44 minimum - 57 average - 73 maximum

On the slow moving scenes of Batmans in-game bench, slight edging could be seen with AA off but this needed to be looked for and on the faster moving scenes, it looked just as good as when 8XMSAA was used. The game was very fluid with 0XMSAA and for a single card, this is ideal. No tearing and nice and smooth.

More to follow.

Awesome stuff here. Awaiting more :)

It is great to see that one card can pull this off. Too many times on forums I see people saying 3 or 4 titans will be needed just to get by. Total lie.

I would like to see crysis eventually just to see how bad it melts one titan or 2. I know that might be the game that takes 3 or 4 high end cards.

Single card handles 4k pretty well, at decently high details :)
Time to choose which monitor i now want, Samsung with the looks but without vesa mounts or the AOC with vesa mounts but 1 month later....hmmm.
They both use the same screen, both cost the same.

I currently have an MSI GTX680 Power Edition and considering upgrading to a 290 (not X version as funds are limited).

Would a R9 290 handle 4K you reckon? Im not too fussy about AA just being able to play at native res.

290 is a stones throw from Titan performance mate, Greg's results will be pretty much what you'd get +-5%.

Awesome, that might just make me pull the trigger then!

I principally play online fps like BF4, COD:Ghosts and Ill probably buy Titanfall when Im back from holiday. Any of those games you could test at 4k online Greg?
Have they sorted the FOV yet?
Not kept up to date, but played 1 match and couldn't change my FOV so uninstalled. Playing with anything less than 90 gives me some pretty bad headaches.

Brilliant Greg, thanks for all the work so far.

I do have a request I hope you can do ?

If you play wow, could you run it in a 25 man LFR and let me know the results and your thoughts ?

I have done some SP in BF4 (can't get online and getting server and game mismatch), so that will have to do for now. SP on the mission where you need to get to the Valkyrie and you jump in the boat and get to where the valkyrie is on fire (Very demanding).

With everything maxed
Frames, Time (ms), Min, Max, Avg
2204, 71761, 16, 42, 30.713

With everything maxed and 2XMSAA
Frames, Time (ms), Min, Max, Avg
2890, 66394, 26, 66, 43.528

With high settings and no AA
Frames, Time (ms), Min, Max, Avg
3807, 68765, 47, 68, 55.362

With medium settings and no AA
Frames, Time (ms), Min, Max, Avg
5683, 73196, 51, 105, 77.641

Can't comment on the game though, as it was a stutter fest but you get an idea of what is what in frames.

Sorry Lamchop but I don't have WoW :(

Hmm not too shabby, this was with only one Titan right?

Default is 65 iirc, that's mental! How do you play with that!! :D
I know you could change on SP, same as framelock....but multiplay, nope! IW did this with MW2, MW3 and now Ghosts. That's why i prefer Trearch, at least they know us PC gamers like to change FOV and do not want the game to be framelocked!

Started up BO2 a few mins ago, people still playing it what's good.

Yep, 2 780's or 2 780Ti's will be fine.

I am going to do a piece on VRAM usage before I go to work at 10pm or tomorrow if I don't get it finished.

Cool. Would like to know this. If it's way over 3g those new 780 6 gb vrams might be worth buying. I'm not going 4k yet. I have a 1440p monitor, but I might go 4k in a year or 2. Just want to know where I stand in the vram department:)
