*** 4K Player Thread ***

Any issues with it? I've read some conflicting views.
I can't say i have encountered any to be honest with you. Trust me i'm a fussy bugger and the slightest thing wrong with it and i'd not be happy.

One thing i have noticed is that it's little loud if you're watching a quiet scene and the player is close to you. Not the end of the world deal breaker but can be annoying but it doesn't put me off.

I will say the build quality feels a little cheap compared to when i tried the Panasonic blu ray players in my local richer sounds.

But at the same time they are £100-£200+ extra. and didn't think it was worth it at the time as i'll just give this one my mother and farther when i upgrade.

I've put 40+ hours in it only using the player, none of the smart features as i use my T.V for that. I honestly can't say i have had any problems.

But i'm sure it's like anything really, some people get a perfect working GPU or T.V and some people have problems.

Star Trek: Into Darkness is also excellent. Doesn't have the ultimate resolution of some others as it comes from a 2K DI but the HDR/WCG combined with the 16:9 IMAX scenes filling the TV make it a very good watch.

I thought about the latest one but I might give it a miss.

Some I'm really looking forward to are Logan, lego batman, Kong and John wick 2. I reckon HDR will shine in lego batman and Kong.

Thinking about it don't buy the new ID. Again they added to much grain to digital film.
Here you can check if the film is 4K or not http://realorfake4k.com/
Lucy and John wick are another 2 good ones. I've got Jack Reacher never go back UHD coming this Friday from HMV.

Cheers, that's a good website.

I'm watching the Martian now and while the picture is good, the letterboxing is wasting the top and bottom of the screen.

Have to admit I really like Lucy, so Im looking forward to watching that again this weekend. (there appear to be two different UHD covers for this film, Im not sure if they are different versions or not though - one has a very prominant HDR label one doesnt)

Ive got a few films to go through, but the original John Wick and Jack Reacher I might get if I see them "on the shelf" somewhere for a decent price.

Im dying for The Abyss to be released, rumours last year was it would be Feb this year, but obviously that isnt happening - just really hoping it isnt too much longer.

That would be surperb - original or Special Ed/Directors cut ?

I like the latter.

Just looked at my copy and it has a very shiny slip cover. I did get the 4 Hunger games films for £60.
2 for £30 at HMV. So I just ordered two at a time :)

Seriously?!

Virtually all films will be letterboxed like this as they're all in (roughtly) 21:9 aspect.
Please don't tell me you're one of these nuts who expects everything to fill their TV screen and is prepared to crop or distort the image to make it fit?

No I'm not one of those people :p it was just an observation.

I don't mind letterboxing but when you see some scenes, like the IMAX shot scenes in inception, move to full screen...they looked incredible!

Yep they do and that's what makes the Into Darkness UHD Bluray look so good. It's also why PE2 is going to be the best thing ever as it'll fill the screen with 4K HDR goodness.

Letterboxing isn't ideal but there's no viable alternative. When I see people spending a fortune on AV equipment and then cropping or distorting the image to fit the screen it makes me cringe.

What we really need is 21:9 TVs, but then everyone would moan about pillarboxed 16:9 content.

There was a trend albeit brief in the 1080p days. Personally I would be top of the list for a 21:9 4k TV, I used a cinemascope screen for my projector for many years and its far and away the best way to watch films.
