5080 & 5090 Coil Whine Thread

I just think with all the stuff going on with the 5 series if you get a quiet coil whine card then I consider that to be a win. Of course we could just get a palit for coil whine free gaming...

Nah I rather take the coil whine.

:p

Palit + waterblock = best of both worlds! (ETA 2 weeks for my block...)

Forgot to update this when I picked up my card: Gigabyte Xtreme Waterforce RTX 5090 - no coil whine at all except when FPS goes mental (300+ and I cap to 240 normally). Then there's some really quiet buzzing but once the card starts to warm up a little bit (card doesn't really get above 60c most the time), you can't really hear it above the radiator fans. And when I put my headphones on or switch to speakers, can't hear the radiator fans or the buzzing at all.

Long and short: no coil whine except under very specific circumstances and gaming with no sound

whats the opinion on inno3d 5090 x3 (on both performance and non-perf params)? couldnt find much other than a single review where it was benchmarked 0.9% slower than the founders edition.. happens to be the only 3 slot non water cooled model available, pls let me know if there are other options as well

Can't speak for the 5090 version, but my Inno3D 4090 X3 OC was an excellent card. Performance was fine and there was no coil whine at all. Not under any circumstances, even on menus with uncapped framerates. I'd never had a card like that before and suspect I never will again (my Palit Gamerock 5090 has a bit of whine on menus).

Managed to get hold of a 5090 Zotac Solid OC last week. Installed it on Saturday. Replaced a 3090 TUF OC which had unbearable coil whine. The Zotac 5090 Solid OC does not really have coil whine on the desktop but its pretty bad in game, high pitched and still audible over the fans. Not sure if I got unlucky or if it is normal.

New member here. I recently got an Asus Astral OC 5090, and it coil whines quite a bit. It's fairly noisy in general when gaming, and in some games like Doom Eternal - the noise becomes higher when moving the mouse. Undervolting, like 0.925mV, the sound gets lower/softer - but it's still there. I've seen several others claim their Astral 5090 has no or negligible coil whine, so I was probably unlucky. (I have a 1200w PSU.)

I would be tempted to send it back, if the availability wasn't so awful - and for all I know the prices could continue to rise even higher. Still, the Asus Astral OC is a fantastic looking card. It boost to well over 2900mhz without overclocking, and can go up to 3100mhz when overclocked. Also very quiet fans. A shame about the coil whine, though...

New here but thought I’d chip in my 2 cents. I have (had - RMA’d it now) an MSI Vanguard SOC Launch Ed 5080. Lovely card even if it’s larger than my house. Fans are silent, performance and OC headroom is amazing…but coil whine is very high. So high I can hear it in another room while it’s squealing away.

Tried undervolting, power limit, fps limit, vsync on/off - all the things really. No change - if anything it was worse when using different setting as the frequency would change. A real shame as otherwise it’s a great card. I’ve RMA’d it under the 14 days and waiting to see what options I’ll have for a replacement given stock levels generally (it’s with another retailer).

I also ordered an Alphacool block for my Zotac card, but it will likely take 2 weeks to be made and delviered.
Mine arrived on the weekend and installed it. The Palit 5080 Gamerock is a very easy one to disassemble and the waterblock was also quite simple to do.

I undervolt/overclock to hit 3GHz with (trying to remember as I'm at work) just under 900mv (875mv maybe), which gives a nice performance boost from the 2.7GHz stock but with a wattage of around 260W rather than ~320W.

Absolute bliss, the lowest coil whine of any card I've had in the last 5 years or more, and with the block on all that GPU fan noise is gone with no apparent increase in fan noise for my loop, which is extremely low.

Can't wait to showe off those GPU fans and put a block on my 5090. The Noctua A12x25 fans on the radiators are so much more sophisticated in every aspect. I wish we could buy plain PCBs for £500 less.

Managing to get hold of a near-impossible to buy GPU only to have to send it back because it has lots of coil whine is the absolute worst. GPU manufacturers need to sort their **** out.

That’s sad to hear. I nearly bought one recently. The only reason I didn’t as I fancied a change from MSI

I was very close to just keeping it given how long it took to get my hands on one - “a high end card” at that. But after a few hours gaming I just couldn’t survive. Not sure what next steps are after RMA but as within 14 days I doubt I’ll keep it either way. What to get next is now a huge dilemma - I’m optimising for silence as this is a living room SFF pc. It was silent in every aspect other than the coil whine. Guess I can try the lottery of another one but imagine they are all likely the same.

Well you can try of having another card. Currently I have 4x5 series (1 rma due to bad coil whine) cards. You now have the scenario where you get that are squealers and angry bees in loading screens, menus etc but are quiet in game and then you get the ones are noisy either way.

I am gonna try the other big 2 like the astral but I am very very familiar with ASU’s cards so I don’t expect them to be much better on the coil whine front. The only other card that interests me is the Aorus master. I am not interested in any other card.

Yeah I might shop around - availability is just still such a pain though. I was tempted by the astral but at that price I just can’t justify it, and if it then has coil whine lol. Such a disappointing product in general all round this year.

Same situation for me, also a livingroom setup. Drove me mad after a few days when I started playing some quieter games.

Returning under your 14 days Distance Selling is quicker and less hassle than pushing for a return as faulty, for sure, but you will have to pay return postage - which is about £20 insured with Royal Mail. I personally would try a different brand if you were keen on rolling the dice again.

Thanks, yeah - again it’s kinda soul destroying haha. Oh well. My wife thinks I’m a lunatic building stuff, unbuilding stuff, shipping things lol.

I managed to RMA the unit with a free DPD collection, so if the RMA isn’t successful (aka replacement or credit etc) they already have the unit so I’ll just claim distance selling return.

Any suggestions on a different model to try? I was thinking the astral as the only other premium (that will fit in my case) but seems ASUS are even worse - although seems 50/50 here in reports of whine. Can go cheaper but cheaper models I’ll trade off fan noise. Thought I was done with all this, sigh.

You could try and get the aorus master another premium card. Failing that the only other card which is in the astral/aorus master class is the suprim X. Unless I am missing another manufacturer with the exception of the AIO cards

No diss to anyone I rather walk over a 100 miles of broken glass to sniff dog poop than stick a palit or zotac in they are even more uglier than last gen manli cards and don't even get me started on the zotac amp extreme. Even the 5090 FE is nowhere near as good looking as the 4090FE
