5090 worth it?

£2599 for the cheapest 5090 on OC/UK, and people are saying buy now before the price goes up!

It’s a ridiculous state of affairs , especially if your just gaming…

Sure the 5090 has its uses and purposes, for gaming though there’s far more sensible options.

I’m personally wondering just where PC gaming is heading, a high end PC these days costs more than an extremely nice car, holiday or even a home improvement…

If you can afford it why the hell not?

Rather you than me though (not that I can afford it!)

It was 2299.99 or 2399.99 when he posed the question so they were right. Most are priced at 3K now.

The one I was looking at on Friday is now up by £300

It's just not worth it, something like a 9070xt will do 4k just fine, or use FSR if it doesnt, or just drop it down to 1440p and whack the in game setting up high.

Then I can put the change into my ETF where it will earn about 10% per year.

What's a £2.6k GPU gonna be worth in ten years? not a lot.

You buy a 5090 to brute force maximum visual performance + high fps - only reason I own one. And the 9070XT can do 4K decently on select titles but not all, even the 5090 needs DLSS to do a lot of heavy lifting to make high fps 4K gaming viable across a bunch of titles.

I won't be using the 5090 in ten years, I'll be selling it for a minor loss / break even or decent return to upgrade to the 6090/7090

just look at the 4090 prices right now, above the 5090 FE on ebay as we speak.

And with the current mayhem I think the 5090 will follow suit and will probably be the 2nd best GPU on the market when the 6090 drops, unless AMD actually deliver something good.
:eek: I remember seeing 5090's for below £1999 last summer.

Yeah the peak time to buy it turns out.

I'd bet the majority of people that buy high end hardware don't keep it for 10 years. Although you could argue that if they get 10 years usage out of it then it's not been a bad buy as it would have worked out at about £20 a month if they spent £2500 initially.

I can only speak for myself but I like to have the high end on release so upgrade soon after, if I was betting on it I'd say that the majority do the same.

I've been guilty of upgrading from K processors to KS variants, switching out perfectly fine motherboards for their refresh equivalents and will end up doing the same when the 9850X3D and Asus refreshed X870E releases. Are they good financial decisions? Am I noticing huge differences in performance? No but it's my only hobby and one I'm fortunate enough to be able to fund.

How expensive something is, is all relative. For some people spending a few hundred pound on a meal out is expensive, and for others spending £10,000 on a night out is only a small percentage of their income. There's people that are strapping themselves up on 4 year PCP's to buy RS, M cars etc that can barely afford to replace all 4 tyres. Each to their own....

Well if the OG poster didn’t buy one afew days ago…. Bad times. The Zotac amp I bought has gone up £500 in 2 weeks Gibbo wasn’t lying.

I downgraded from the 5090 to 9070XT and don't regret it. It really depends how much gaming is part of your life. If you have any other expensive hobbies, then it might be worth spreading your budget around.

Regardless of what happens to AI or the Dram crisis or whatever, NVIDIA isn't going to stop making these type of cards. If you miss out on the 5090, you only have 12-18 months to wait for the 6090 :cry:

I don't think I would buy a 5090 that costs 2.5x a 5080.
You probably could upgrade for the next 2 generations and save money.

5090 = £2500

5080 = £1000
6080 = £1200 (-£600 selling the 5080) so £600 - it will probably perform the same as the 5090
7080 = £1500 (-£750 selling the 6080) so £750 - it will probably perform better than the 5090

Total £2350

That's extremely optimistic, and ignores the memory issues that aren't looking to slow anytime soon, made worse by Nvidia's focus on AI and them being the only legitimately high end consumer GPU provider.

At this point I wouldn't be surprised if a 7080 never exists at all, I'm on the line regarding a potential 6080 to be entirely honest. The 5080 was barely any faster than a 4080S, for two generations now we've seen that only top tier halo products actually command a notable performance increase. Nvidia is currently cutting down on the production of 16gb variant cards too, due in large to memory costs and AI demand. Also note that the much lauded 5000 series "super" refresh with more VRAM has been canned, we wont be seeing a new generation of Nvidia GPU's until potentially 2027 and by that point as mentioned they might not even bother with the mid range, which the X080 line has absolutely turned into.

The 5090 might be a lot more expensive, but it's also up to 70% faster, if PC gaming is a major hobby and you have the funds I'd argue that buying one now is a safe gamble, more so if it's used for workloads as well as gaming.

Same applies for those with a 5090. Larger initial outlay, but more back when selling. Repeat the cycle like you said.

I think the PC is a reasonable proposition, but the upgrade market must be dying. £3000 isn't an upgrade price, it 's a new PC price.

The real problem is not the GPU, its the RAM. AI requires RAM and absolutely tons of it. It's not the GPU that dictates the price of the card, but how much RAM it has. This is why NVIDIA limit the RAM on cheaper models. If it didn't, business would buy those instead of the top end cards. NVIDIA don't want to make it economical to buy lesser cards.

The simple fact is that AI is far more popular than gaming right not, and people are prepared to pay BIG money to run it.

Nobody seems to have mentioned the main benefit of having a 5090 yet which is you get to put it in your signature so everyone on the forum knows how cool you are.
I had to carefully weigh up whether it was worth 2 grand to achieve this but eventually came to the conclusion that this money would be better spent on drugs, hookers and Freddos.
