Chaps,

My old man finally wants to update his ageing TV, as it's starting to show some issues on screen.

I immediately said get an OLED as that seems to be the 'in thing' for new TV's, and is the best technology at the moment......or is it?

I'm not really too up to date with new tech in TVs, so I wouldn't mind some quick opinions.

I initially said get the LG OLED55B6V Smart 4k Ultra HD HDR 55" OLED TV

He's just been in the Indian take away shop name (not sure if I can say them here!) and they recommended the SONY BRAVIA KD55XD9305BU Smart 3D 4k Ultra HD HDR 55" LED TV.

It's £500 cheaper (not too much of an issue for my Dad), but it's LED, not OLED. Does that matter?

I had a quick look in the shop the other day, at the LG, and was simply stunned by how dark the OLEDs can go, and the IQ in general. I'm sure the LEDs are great too, but for a new TV that will last him years, is it better to get the latest tech now?

Thanks

I have done so much research on this and eventually went with the UE55KS8000 (SUHD).
You'll get fans from each camp swaying your view but I thought the AV Forums review of the Samsung topped the LG OLED.

Ok thanks.

Doesn't have to be the LG. From a quick look that seemed to have rave reviews.

I guess the question would be is it really worth going with OLED, ignoring the price.

What pros does LED have?

OLED is better than LCD which btw is what your really talking about when you say LED. LED is the type of backlighting used.

For instance before the used LED backlights the tv's weren't called PWM TV's, etc.

Now they use LED's as backlights they are called LED, it's all a marketing gimmick. They are LCD's.

OLED has the deepest blacks and best image quality. Every review on AVforums and HDtvtest says so.

LCD's - high end ones are also very good.

OLED is the benchmark it's the 10/10.
Premium LCD's are 9/10
Premium plasma's are 9.5/10

Does he really care about IQ? If not just get him a half decent LCD. IMO OLED's are too expensive for what they offer. For instance my premium 50" plasma only cost £899 about 3-4 years ago. 55" OLED's are £1300+. Baring in mind with time bigger tv's become cheaper.

I'll buy OLED when 60" can be had for less than £1K.

Well I've got the Panasonic TX-P50GT50 and I'm still really impressed with that tbh.

The LG OLED55B6V is still my top pick. If not, then the Samsung UE55KS8000 is second pick. There is 'only' a £400 price difference between them, so for my Dad who buys a new TV every half decade or more, I think that's not an issue.

Are you aware of the half life of OLED though? OLED's won't last as long as a LCD in their current format. They are new tech and life / brightness is their major flaw.

If he doesn't upgrade regularly save £400 and buy the LCD.

If money was no object OLED. If money is, I have a Sammy KS7000 and I'm happy enough with it - others on here have had problems though.

Richer Sounds offer a 6 year guarantee on the LG OLED55B6V, that's good enough in my view and by the time 6 years are up i'd be thinking about replacing it anyway

I'm seriously considering the LG OLED55E6V which by all accounts simply has the best 3D of any TV ever made. And i have about 70 3D blu-rays that i still want to watch

EDIT - Half Life is now over 14 years for LG sets:

If I can find it, I have the quoted lifespan from an LG representative. Standby.
EDIT: Got it.
"The MFG warranty is 1 year parts and 1 year labor. The life expectancy of LG OLED is 30K hours to 50K hours to half brightness. Only coming from the use/on time of the panel; not from being off. That is 7 days a week, 6 hrs a day to reach 14.5 years to 20 years to half brightness. If a customer watches the TV in Vivid mode they will be closer to the 14.5 year number. If the customer has the OLED calibrated (or run in Cinema mode) they will be at the 20 year to half brightness level. Calibration is not only good for panel life but picture quality also; it is a win win! 2016 models will have substantially increased hours that can not be released until product ships, but I expect them to be brighter."

Second EDIT - first EDIT was for Pre-2016 models, 2016 models of LG TV's are now 100,000 hours. so that's a minimum of 30 years

Again by buying the LCD you would have £400 to put towards your new tv in 6 years time.

OLED is good but IMO too expensive in it's current format.

I've owned 3 plasmas (still have 1), modern premium LCD's (have 2 atm) and it all depends on how big of an enthusiast you are.

I doubt his dad would even appreciate the OLED so better to save him £400 I say this based on the fact he doesn't buy tv's regularly and keeps them for 10 years at a time. He would likely be unable to tell the difference between OLED and the Samsung posted. I bet though he could tell if he had an extra £400 in his pocket to spend on a holiday.

Again if my mate asked me the same question I'd tell him to buy OLED. However his dad is old and doesn't seem to care much about TV's.

False economy, you're not going to have £400 pounds floating in your bank account for 6 years, also if you read my updates, the life of the panels now exceed that of LCD/LED's

Tested a few OLED's now, Samsung as with their LED's tend to make their pictures to 'hot' if you know what i mean and are a bitch to calibrate. LG on the other hand are leagues ahead in picture quaility. When i saw my first LG OLED i instantly saw how superior it was compared to everything else i saw in the shop. And when the guys at Richer Sounds let me fiddle with it i was blown away with the picture quaility. I'm a bit of a cinephile and i consider them worth the money

The more expensive Sony's are still very very nice but they and in particular Samsung have been resting on their laurels. At a pinch i would recommend the Sony 55XD9305BU if you really don't want a LG but i would spend the extra because the sony range are having problems with screens coming out of the box bent in the middle when they should be completely straight, you can see it almost every place they sell them. I'll take a photo today if i go out into town. Samsung on the other hand fool people into thinking they have good picture quaility by jacking up the brightness to ridiculous levels, like back in the 90's when people were getting fooled into buying cheap all-in-one sound systems because it was "100w" per speaker OMG!!!

The Indian place has a 5 year guarantee on pretty much every 'high end' TV I've looked at, so life span is a non issue to be honest.

I'll do a bit more reading, especially comparing the best LCDs with the current OLEDs.

Thanks again

If you look at the other active thread, avoid Curry's at all costs. Go to Richer Sounds, better customer service, same prices and an extra year guarantee.

Really how so?

If the price is the same, an extra years guarantee is fair enough.....but the customer service can't be that bed. If you need to return a TV, they replace it.....job done. Not much more they can do is there?

Look at the other thread a read through, Curry's are a nightmare to deal with if something goes wrong

https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18762282

Whereas I've had my soundbar and Panasonic 58" 902 led tv replaced twice without even a blink of the eye and I bought mine from Currys...so yeh no they are fine, I've yet to have an issue with them.

If you go in and demand they do this and that, when they have to follow certain procedures then you still can't get it through your thick skull then I don't blame them for being arsey.

I should know as I've spent a few yrs in retail management and any ******** customers that came in, I would just make their lives more difficult by wasting their time, making them wait extra long in order to give them their refund or exchange.

I can't see an issue in buying from Currys to be honest. Sure there might be some horror stories but what store doesn't?!

LG is still no 1 for me.
