57mph in 40mph. Confusing NSL sign. Can you be the jury...

Poor sign planning and incorrect fixing (whether the latter is intentional or not) have resulted in you being incorrectly instructed as to what the correct speed limit for the road was. I would contest this, especially as I don't think it's reasonable to second guess every road sign as being potentially wrong. If the road itself appeared hazardous then fine, but it looks adequate for an NSL.

I also do not think it is obvious that the NSL sign is intended for the side road. The sign should be on the road, not on the junction. If you were turning left and the NSL sign was turned 90 degrees clockwise, it would be visible for barely a moment before you'd pass it. Based on the fact that you received an FPN, I think it's clear that the NSL is actually intended for that road to the left, but I don't think it's so blatent that one would be expected to assess the junction and road signage, in the split second that you have, and come to that conclusion.

Definitely post on Pepipoo.

Seems odd to have the NSL sign right on the corner of that left turn. Surely it would be better placed having it a short distance up that side road?

I would say it is confusing... certainly if you have not ever driven on that stretch of road before.

You clearly took it to mean the road you were on, so clearly it isnt clear signage!

However if you contest it you risk getting a grumpy magistrate on her period who will brand you a child killer etc ;)

That is confusing and is not obvious imo. Speed limits for turnings/other roads are never shown on the road that you are turning off!

I wonder if the police knew this and were waiting.

I personally would have thought that was for the road you were on, not the side road as I have never seen a sign for that purpose in that position. It is very misleading, it just depends on whether you want to hope a court sees it the same way as you :(

I must be one of very few who took one look at the photo and immediately assumed the sign was meant for the road off to the left then :( Look how far over to the left it is (albeit not quite far enough probably), and there's a filter lane etc.

OP can you post a google maps link so we can streetview from various angles?

The speed limit should be facing the direction of travel (well opposite it actually, so cars can see it).

How many times do you see an NSL sign facing you that applies only to a sideroad? In retrospect it can be seen that the sign has probably been turned around by someone, but that doesn't mean it now has no legal standing.

I reckon the OP stands a reasonable chance, definitely worth asking on the stupidly named Pepipoo forums.

I can see how it would apply to the road on the left but I can also see how you'd think it meant straight ahead when you didn't have time to stop and study the situation - without any indication otherwise I would assume a sign facing direction of travel meant it applied from that point on along my direction of travel.

Seems a terribly good place to get people speeding isn't it? I might have confused it as well dude, i personally would go to court but i understand why you wouldn't.

It looks a lot clearer on the street view to be honest and obvious that it's a sign for the side road. Risky to take it further I think.
