57mph in 40mph. Confusing NSL sign. Can you be the jury...

It looks a lot clearer on the street view to be honest and obvious that it's a sign for the side road. Risky to take it further I think.

There's also a 40mph repeater within 100 yards of the junction so there's no chance you'd win in court.

I've just realised where it is as it's local to me. The streetview picture in the op makes it look much worse than it is in real life. The sign is at the same angle as the side road.

It does look obvious it's for the side road in the other views on Google Maps. I'm going back tomorrow to take a 2nd look as I was obviously convinced to the contrary at the time. I'd slowed down to 40mph by the repeater. The police car was parked just after.

I would still say that the NSL sign is in the wrong place as if you were to turn into the side road you would see a Max Height sign on your right facing directly out. This would only be visible if you were turning into the side road. If the NSL sign was there it would stop the confusion I think.

Pedant mode one: Its actually more than 100 yards. More like 350 yards. ;)

That is confusing and is not obvious imo. Speed limits for turnings/other roads are never shown on the road that you are turning off!

I wonder if the police knew this and were waiting.

i think you are right, no reaonable person would expect that sign to relate to the side road... the police will know people see it and speed up... they will never admit that but I bet the were trapping there because people keep making the same mistake...

Not that this is very relevant but does anyone see any NSL repeater signs on that side road with the street lights? I thought there had to be if there were equally spaced street lights...

I would be shocked if they could enforce that in court, it's ridiculous having a sign pointing towards traffic that it doesn't apply to

They wouldn't put a NSL sign in front of a junction like that and they are always on both sides of the road level with each other.

Isn't there an NSL sign on the right of that junction or am I seeing things?

Incidentally I would assume that it is for the side road based on its position so far away from the curb, having said that I would also expect to see a "repeated" 40mph sign just after the junction to clear up confusion, I say fight it!

had you gone to court you would have won, the sign is facing the wrong way (should be in line with the road its for regardless of the junction turning) and is in the correct position for a NSL repeater on your road. the was a situation like this round here recently where the police had to refund fines to 100+ people and quash the points

If the OP hadn't passed a repeater then I'd contest it due to the visible NSL sign partially obscuered by foliage, which could give the impression there may have been another obscured one the other side.

Unfortunately any appeal would have gone out of the window as the offence was recorded past a repeater sign.
