57mph in 40mph. Confusing NSL sign. Can you be the jury...

Hmm interesting one... its facing oncoming traffic that are going straight ahead (I would have atleast expected it to be on an angle if not 90degrees to its current orientation/further up the road to the left), there are no arrows on the sign itself to indicate that it applies to the left hand turn.... very confusing in this context there should be a 40 MPH circle on the road infront of the straight ahead arrow IMO.

It actually faces the traffic in the filter lane.

Andi.

No one noticed its facing that way because cars entering that road will be doing so from the slip road?

Oh ok then.

What about cars turning right into that road, don't they deserve to know?

I know people have said that it's obvious and to be honest with a picture it is but imagine doing 40 (or just under :) ) and seeing that, think I'd personally be fooled.

Good point, I bet there's a no right turn from the other side :)

Yes, hence the sign on the opposite side pointing to traffic coming that way in a similar fashion.

I can't beleive people haven't seen signs angled like this before, but hope they take note so not to end up in the same situation.

Cars turning right into that road will see this one

from ^that link, it's quite clearly a sign for the turning and not the road that you are on, the sign is well away from the curb and angled correctly.

Take it as lesson learnt and thank jesus/buddha/allah that you didn't kill any children

I popped up earlier to have a look and took a couple of pictures

Shows the signs are in a logical place for the end of the road.

However the first repeater afterwards isn't clear at all (it's fairly hidden by a bush and it's very dirty) so there could be some chance of getting off from this. However as the road has street lights on it's defaults to 30mph unless signed otherwise.

I didn't manage to get over to Skipton today, so you've saved me a journey. Thank you! :) Very annoyed at that dirty repeater. Didn't see that one at all. I saw the nice clean one just after it on the right, shortly followed by police car in the junction just after! But all too late by then. :(
Fine paid and license surrendered to be issued with points. You live and learn.

As the google links have pointed out, you would have mugged yourself off and displayed the same kind of failure to read the road and and its signals as the OP.

I don't think you will win contesting, but if I was putting those signs up I would have placed then 20-30m down the side road, just makes so much more sense for both directions

Not sure if you'd win or not but I think I'd fight it just for the sake of it.

Also I'd rather risk paying a few £100 court fees if there was a chance it could save some points.

And inconvenience some sneaky lazy traffic cops.

You may well end up with more points as well though, I ended up getting 4 points when I went to court for speeding (90mph on the M3) whereas if I had got the fixed penalty then I would have got 3 points.

I doubt he would get off either. It's only 1 brief camera angle where you might think "is that for this road" and then it becomes obvious it's not.

personally id go back, clean that repeater sign myself. Your not going to get anywhere appealing, so just make sure others dont get caught.
