580 3 gig against the 680

For sure there will always be something better around the corner, I think it's more the excellent older cards need to drop more, and let's face it we don't have much of a 28nm choice yet either !

The trouble is we're all seduced by the new stuff, nobody likes to buy old, however smart we are..

is it bragging ? no it's just the way life is in a modern world, nobody want old technology.... everything has to be new new new and it has to be here right now, people are just too impatient !

people here are already talking about getting rid of their new 680s, i knew this would happen, that's why i said dont buy now

This is sooo true! I've been looking at 480's and 580's in the MM, both great cards, but part of my subconscious is niggling at me... "old tech, old tech, do not buy!" :(

It is about the bragging. Well, not so much the bragging but the feeling of self satisfaction. That seems to delude us, making us do silly things.

I mean, the amount of people who sold their 580 and bought a 680 is crazy right now. Thing is, none of the 580s are selling either. That's for a few reasons, most notably the seller of them not realising that no one wants them at the high end now. They didn't want it, opting to sell it and buy a 680, so why should they believe that some one else would buy it at a high price instead of a 680?

Fact is a huge proportion of PC gamers use 1080p. As much as the people using a higher resolution don't want to accept it it's just fact. The poll on here says it all. Thus, all they have gained really in true upgrade terms over a 580 is 512mb of vram.

Kinda stupid really !

yes, a 580 wont sell simply because it's now history..and it's been dumped it in favour of the new 680

you get loads of new cards.......... then quiet for months..... then repeat again next year, you buy when this cycle ends.... at the end of the summer, not when this begins, because right now in this busy period there are loads of new cards due to come out, and if you do your research this ``stock`` 680 is the slowest of the bunch.

it's not about buying something for the sheer hell of it, it's buying something far too early in the season and not realising this

I have 3 unsolicited offers for my 580 right now, and I wasn't even planning on buying a 680. I have a habit of selling my old hardware quite cheaply to people I know, so maybe that is it. But I think they should sell quite well at the right price. I have no idea what they're trying to get on the MM, I don't have access, but if I were to sell mine it would be for ~£150 just to help take some of the sting out of the 680 price.

I don't think the 680 is "all that" when compared to the outgoing 580 either, but surely its more than just 512Mb of VRAM, even at 1080p. There's a clear performance gain that I think should be noticeable in the more demanding titles.

If the price is right mate then yes, it will induce amnesia.

And no, right now it is nothing more than the extra vram @ 1080p because the 1.5gb 580 can easily make mince out of BF3 on ultra at that res.

In time? well, hopefully PC gaming may continue to develop more and the 680 could well become useful with the 580 becoming useless. It really stinks because when your card is out of vram there is absolutely nothing you can do about it.

I wish that GPU makers had the common sense to separate the vram and allow you to replace it. Years ago ATI used to have a card where the vram was stored on small card you could add in if you wanted more. Just never caught on :(

Mind you, that was back in the days where the CPU cache wasn't even on the CPU and came as an optional extra on a card :D

I agree, I'd love to see modular graphics cards even if it was limited to VRAM. They're very expensive considering how quickly they go out of fashion. I was thinking about it recently, and realised that I can update my CPU, RAM, and Mobo, and still have change for the money it would take to upgrade my 580. There isn't even the illusion of good value there, I'm quite surprised how quickly OcUK has sold its 1st batch of cards.

With all the bells, whistles and HD Packs, Skyrim on my rig maxes out in most outdoor scenes at about 1525MB, leaving me a grand total of about 10MB vram left.

Even with 4x AA, it often hits over 1500.

If you plan on playing Skyrim, get a 680.
