Hey

So I'm going to be upgrading from a x5670 soon and I've been eyeing up a 5820k

I'll be buying used and need ram CPU and mobo.

Is a 5820k a good buy or is there something else? Any hidden gems like the Xeon I have now?

Thanks for any advice.

Forgot to mention it's just for gaming and I will be clocking it as well

If its just for gaming maybe worth looking at the 6700k/7700k and the ryzen's as well.

1080p monitor and I'm not changing for a while. I've got a gtx780 but I'm upgrading that soon.

My plan it to put it all on water then not upgrade for a good while so I'm thinking 5820k for the extra cores

I'm not sure if there's any point getting an i7-5820K over an i7-8700K unless you want quad channel memory and extra PCIe lanes. The i7-8700K is around the same price, will clock higher, and will probably have a slightly cheaper motherboard.

Probably no point putting older tech like this under water. Ryzen 6 cores stand up well and would cost similar to put under water.

New Ryzen refresh is out in a couple of months which has put the cost of the first Ryzen gen cpus down a lot. Today they chopped between 10 and 27% off the cpus. You could wait for new Ryzen refresh or get a discounted first gen ryzen now cheaper than it has ever been.

If you are playing 1080P 60hz then a ryzen should be ok. Be warned of DDR4 prices though.

I'm buying used so the 5820k will be much cheaper I think?

Yeah I get what your saying but I'm not that bothered about the age and I've already got everything to put it under water.

I think I'll have to see which is best bang for buck

Typical that something new is coming out when I want to upgrade now :-/

Ah if you're buying used then yeah an i7-5820K is probably a better choice over Coffee Lake. Might wanna look at Ryzen since an R5 1600 might even be cheaper new than a used i7-5820K though.

I've not had anything AMD for 15 years or so. Not that I'm a hardcore intel fan or anything. Bit with ryzen I sort of been out of with the stability when overclocked. Is this still something of a problem?

How would a 5820k (clocked as high as I can go) Vs a 1600 (clocked as well) compare

You'll probably get around 500 MHz more with the i7-5820K, so it'll definitely be faster. It's an older, dead platform though, and may cost more even used so just bear that in mind.

the 5820k ocd will be better than the ryzens in games . either pick a cheap 5820k up cheap if you can and mobo or go 8700k.no point in ryzen at the moment.coffee lakes have em beat.x99 platform still good for a few years yet and still quicker than ryzens.

the ddr 4 ram prices is the killer though

5820k is faster in games than ryzen 1700x both under water max overclock. I know cause went ryzen from it for more cores.

I wouldn't take a used 5820K and X99 board over a Ryzen 6 or 8 core unless it was drastically less money to put the system together.

This was my thinking. It will last a few years and the price isn't all that bad.

Cpu £170
Mobo £150
Ram £ 80+

That's what prices I've been looking at for the 5820k

You could build a new Ryzen 7 system with 16gb of RAM and a decent X370 board for not much more. I think AMD have also announced a price drop on Ryzen too.

nah not too bad.the warranty is what could be the only issue.if its just for 2 years for eg then id say its worth it. aslong as the ram you quoted is 16gb.

I think low speed ram at that price. The + was is I wanted better. Which I know I'll get a itch for something better at some point :-)
