5820k or something else?

You could build a new Ryzen 7 system with 16gb of RAM and a decent X370 board for not much more. I think AMD have also announced a price drop on Ryzen too.

I think £400 is my max budget right now for the ram, cpu and mobo.

I've got to upgrade my GPU and get a block for that as well but I'll look into a ryzen a bit more.

Are there any Xeon CPUs like that 5820k that could be cheaper ?

There is a 6700k/16gb 3600mhz on the MM

Just noticed that OCUK still hasnt' dropped the price of the Ryzen CPU's even though the drops were announced. That bundle above that I posted to will be less than £400 when the price drops are factored in.

That's not a bad deal actually. Maybe I could get 16gb when the price drops. Won't be till the end of week or maybe next week till I can get it so prices should be sorted by then.

Get yourself an x79/x99 with a 1560 v2/v3.

Secondhand dream machine. Plenty of years left in them and cheap!

I can't seem to find out much about them.

Look like the same as the 5820k on intel site but other than that I'm drawing a blank.

Can't find them on the eBay and do they overclock the same? Is there anything similar to this chip that I should keep a eye out for? Just seen a 1660 V3 but it's almost the same price as a 5820k and it's a ES chip

Cheers

I have a 5820k and if buying now I’d sink my £400 into Ryzen. You’ll get significantly more scope to upgrade, you don’t need 4 memory DIMMS and it’s more efficient. Plus you’ll get a warranty.

Yeah going end up costing the same I think.

Correct me if I'm wrong because I lost touch after sandy bridge.

If I get x79 and 1560/1660 V2 it will be cheap, I can use ddr3 plus I get a nice 6 core CPU that will more than do for a year or so ?

I love my 5820k but if I was buying something now I'd probably go down the Coffeelake or Ryzen route. Just for potentially more longevity I guess.

Yup a lot of people on x79 went that route. I think x79 boards are hard to find though.

if you look at it realistically from this point.

ryzen you going to be upgrading in probably 3 year max regardless of if you can put a slightly better cpu in at later date.its false acconomy.youll be doing a full upgrade by the time you thinking of swapping the cpu.
5820k if you can pick up a good clocker cheap and cheaper than the ryzen its going to be as good as and faster in games for the same period as the ryzen set up
8700k in games fastest of the lot for the period of all three choices.dearest choice over the period but over 3 years by very little.

work out the cost over the lifespan you keeping it. id rather pay 60-70 extra per year to have the best gaming performance.intel are way aghead in games already.ryzens 20/30 percent behind in some games.now.imagine later.during your pc lifespan.even slower in 2 years time.yet a 8700k will still be right at the top.its worth the small extra per year.

I would love a 8700k but I can't stretch to that kind of money right now.

Are you talking about a ryzen 1600? Would a 1700/1800 come back onto play in a year or so with it having extra cores?

I know no one knows the future but it's looking like more and more cores will be used so 8 core should pull ahead eventually?

8 cores wont because of the core speed you realistically going to get.unless you living in cuckoo land. ryzen you realistically going to get upto 4ghz.at best.

in 2-3 years the 8 cores will still be not beneficial enough to overtake the 6 with higher mhz of the intel.thats why you have the 8700k with the high clock speed.

realistically even if it does start to come into play over a 6 core intel chip if brought now it wont be until you going to upgrade again anyway.so over the life span you still had the better performance for the longer period of the time with the intel chips.

it wouldnt be a bad choice to buy a new ryzen for a slightly more than the 5820k option as you will have warranty on everything.for the period you keeping it.that alone to many is worth the price knowing you covered.it just wont be the quickest. i guess it depends on what matters most.value/speed/warranty.

Yeah good point. In 2 years or so I'll probably upgrade.

I think it's going to have to be a 5820k or a Xeon equivalent. So many out there it's hurting my brain now trying to find the right one and for the right price. eBay is a mine field lol

why would you have a ryzen ?

8700k at stock is 10-15 percent quicker than a stock 5820k.oc on a decent 5820k to 4.2 is level with a stock 8700k actually quicker multicore than the 8700k slower in single core.so in literally all games you will be faster.with the a 5820k if its a decent clocker over any ryzen cpu.it all depends on the price you can get whatever you considering.which ever you get you will get good performance.it just comes down to what price you pay and if you want warranty or not.

Thanks for all the advice but I've ended up with a 5960k

Long story short.... The wife's granddad passed 6 months ago. He was a graphic designer.

So I've got a full rig for the cost of Faubourg for the nan-in-law for ever more.

Might sound mega lucky but in the last 12 months I've reprinted her chimney, jetwashed here front and back garden, painted her fences, loads of other bits and bobs all for free because I can't take money off family and it sometimes cost me money through expencive and loss of work
