5820k or something else?

Edit whoops too late ^^^^, mind you for free can't complain :)

If you are going Intel i would hold off because as a result of this Meltdown thing its becoming apparent that Intel CPU's may see performance slowdowns, especially 4'th and 5'th gen ones which is what the 5820k is.

https://www.theverge.com/2018/1/9/16868290/microsoft-meltdown-spectre-firmware-updates-pc-slowdown

Windows 10 running on Skylake, Kaby Lake or newer CPU show benchmarks show “single-digit slowdowns”, but most users shouldn’t expect to see noticeable slowdowns
Windows 10 running on Haswell or older CPUs “show more significant slowdowns” and “some users will notice a decrease in system performance”

amd cpus are effeted aswell.forget mr scaremonger.it will be patched.

One A6 APU might be vunrable, and it's possible under Very specfic Linux situations you could have a problem. Everything else is secure. So no AMD are not effected. It's just Intel.....

I'm a 5820k owner too, if buying today I would go with a ryzen 1700 and oc, wouldnt touch intel and there confusing number of cpu's, ram prices suck from when i bought too :(

5820k is still a beast! but only if you can buy cpu mobo ram cheap ! otherwise invest in an i7 8700k. as your gpu is weak i'd also upgrade that.

as said before it basically like a stock 8700k if you get a good clocker.but buying 2nd hand now you would want to be getting the mobo for a good price and the ram.

dave for games what you say is not a bad choice in games like bf1 and pubg i think the 5820k will be better.

8400 is neck and neck with an OC’d 5820K in BF1 in the above video. PUBG I can’t find any comparisons in but I doubt there’d be much in it.

I think the 5820k has largely had its day for gaming (and I own one) the 8400 gives the same gaming performance as an OC’d 5820K for £200 and uses probably a quarter of the power doing it. The 5820K will still tackle multithreaded workloads better.

I’d go for a 8400k looking at that. Performs better at 65w compared with a 5820k at 140w stock or almost 250w OC’d.

Yes the power consumption on the old X99 setups is a bit on the high side compared to days newer cpu`s when overclocked. It will be interesting to see how much the new 8 core will use when overclocked.

I've got the 5930k now. Just eating n a few parts then I'll have it under water. Because I got the computer for free I treated myself to a Titan X (Maxwell) that will be need water too

5820K owner here, that's the problem, moving you save on power, it's a what 3+ year old chip? I want double the performance by now at this price point! lol

I don't see how its "largely had its day for gaming" looking at those results, it's far from being a bad gaming CPU. In fact i likely won't even bother upgrading this year, Zen 3 / Ice lake might tempt me but if not i have no problems waiting for DDR5 to come along before i do upgrade.

The main reason I wanted to upgrade is because I had a itch lol. The x5670 @ 4.1 was doing fine for the games and res I was playing at.

I don't think I'll update for 2 years now.

I was hoping for 3 years when i upgraded to a 5820K a year ago. Pretty sure it'll do it with ease.

Easy. The way things are now make 5.
Aye pal, especially with AAA games mostly being garbage and indie titles running happy as larry on a head of broccoli. Super happy with my current build and relieved I got all my hardware before brexit, mining and ram shortages.
