5850 overclocking problem

Thanks for that. Will start OCing now :)

Let us know how you get on, I hit a wall @1030 on the core with the memory @1200, Even pumping 1.25v through it i would still get artifacts.

Settled for 1000/1200 with 1.2v, Hitting 60C ~ 65C at full load with 50% fan speed.

I don't want to up the voltage too much, 1000 on the core is a great overclock in my opinion.

what kind of % performance increase will that give you?

I left it at 870/1200 so far, because I did not want to tweak the voltage. It runs at about 40* idle and 60* on full use (with about 55% fan usage which is pretty loud).

Running FurMark for 15 min in stability test it showed avarage fps 86, power consumption on full load about 55W (53A) and max temp 60*. No problems to report so far.

1 problem I have found already, my ATI overdrive don't work anymore, whatever settings I choose and click apply, nothing's happening. So I can't control my GPU fan manually anymore :( which is a problem when Afterburner's not enabled

EDIT: I don't know what I did but it works now

I just had a weird problem setting clocks too, Installed the new driver and re-booted, Seems that Afterburner would not set clocks until i adjusted settings with CCC then went back to Afterburner.

I would say around 10%, I'm no mathematician though :D

I think i got to around 900 core before i had to up the voltage. 1.2v is safe.

53A ? That cant be right, Is it ?

Recommended Power Supply

Radeon HD 5850
The card requires you to have a 500 Watt power supply unit at minimum if you use it in a high-end system. That power supply needs to have (in total accumulated) at least 40 Amps available on the +12 volts rails.

Radeon HD 5850 CrossfireX
A second card requires you to add another 170 Watts. You need a 650+ Watt power supply unit if you use it in a high-end system. That power supply needs to have (in total accumulated) at least 55~60 Amps available on the +12 volts rails.

That is not right, I have 2x18a 12v rails on my coolermaster 460 and can happily overclock the 5850 without any stability problems, the same power supply was running a 3870 and a 3850 before which combined are more power hungry than the 5850.

I think this is probably covering their backs for the poor quailty supplys out there.

That is what i do, Find your best performance values, Save as a profile.

When you are ready to load a game, Run Afterburner, Load profile and play the game.

Gaming finished, Click 'Reset' in Afterburner, Close Afterburner.

Back to default clocks and powerplay is effective in 2D.

After few hours of testin (ie few rounds in BC2 beta) I must say this method works... sort of. I use CCC for webbrowsing and general 2D stuff and switch on afterburner only if I want to play games, BUT after I finish playing even after clicking on 'Reset' and closing AB it won't enable CCC Overdrive and no power saving mode. Only PC restart seems to cure that and gives me control over CCC OD.

That's what FurMark said when I ran stability test. I posted link on previous page of this thread, download and see for yourself (good test too). EDIT: oh and run GPU-Z at the same time it will give you few more read outs in FurMark

I will play a little bit more tomorrow, but I feel I don't need a massive OC on my 5850 XXX. I can run BC2 beta absolutely maxed out only using CCC Overdrive in about 40fps already.

I feel my CPU is bottlenecking my rig atm, as my i7 860 still runs at stock speed (need to buy a proper cooler asap).
