5870 1000 core v GTX 480 850 core

Nice review. :) If my 4870X2 went kaput today then I would very likely get the same card. Will you consider putting yours under water or are you satisfied so far, early days I know, with air cooling?

Nah, 870 on the core is high enough for me even with the noise which is not too bad, to go water cooling for maybe 40-60 core extra is not worth it.

Image quality better with 480??

When I switched from GTX 295 to HD5870 the first thing I noticed was how much clearer ATI looked, but how much worse the AA was with ATI!

When I switched to the 480 from a 4870X2 I noticed the IQ was better and games were smoother. 32xAA is lovely on the eyes. :)

LOL @ Raven playing at 1680x1050 and 4xAA. Crank the AA up and grab yourself a new display. ;)

Anyway congrats on your new purchase. :)

4xAA was for comparisons to the 5870 benchmarks done with 4xAA.

Why should I upgrade my screen, it's an IPS model and image quality is stunning, max crysis, justcause 2 and metro out at my rez, noway do you get a solid 60 FPS, so why would I want to go higher in rez and kill my FPS even more.

A prity nice read mate, still think your mad a 480 @1680x1050 seems just a tad overkill :P

And strange abot the IQ being better on the 480 than it was on your 5870, going from my old 280 to my 5870 I noticed a prity big jump in IQ in every game i have tryed so far

Why were you only playing at 4xAA on the 5870?

LOL at your excuse for not buying a decent res display. Image quality would be even better with a higher res ISP display. As for killing frames most games out there can easily be maxed out with a top end card at 1080/1200p.

Go stick crysis/warhead on max, most of the time you're 40-50 FPS and worse on some levels, just cause 2, max it out nowhere near a solid 60 FPS at my rez, so this garbage about overkill for a certain rez is nonsense, you tell that to my 480 maxing out ARMA 2.

I sit one meter away from my screen, it's bigger enough to get the job done.

Question really is how much did it cost, and would 2 lesser cards be available at the same cost, and are they faster. IE if you spent £400ish, would 2x460gtx's(i really don't know how they are in sli compared to a 480) or 2x5850's be faster.

The answer is probably that the 480gtx gets pretty well spanked in both situations, for potentially lower cost(not sure how much an EVGA one goes for as ocuk don't have one).

I've said since launch, its faster, but meh, its still not worth the cost, theres better options, the ONLY time i'd consider a 480gtx is buying 3+ of them, because at that money/performance nothing can touch it. IF money is no object then you can't beat multiple 480gtx's, but at any specific price point, theres better options, maybe much much better options.

It also seems like somethings a tad up with your numbers, as the difference wasn't really seen in a single review to date, from launch, or from 460gtx reviews which redid 480gtx results with latest drivers.

Also intentional or not, its basically all of Nvidia's strongest games in together, even so the numbers don't quite add up, could it even be you overclocked the 5870 too far, where you can lose significant performance rather than gain it, but not crash out or become unstable.

Meh, anyway you cut it, realistically if the 480gtx cost more than about £370, for the same money you can get significantly more performance, and if it cost a bit less then 2x 460's/5850's would cost you more, but performance increase would be greater than the % cost increase so still much better value.

My other fundamental view, which I've said in most threads, is business wise, the 480gtx again was never a bad card, but a company that can't make money on a £400+ gpu, is failing, and if it does that for generation after generation that company will stop existing because thats how life works. THe cards need to make profit to cover manufacturing costs and staff, and needs to make further profit to cover what add's up to billions over a few years of R&D costs.

GF100/GF104 and most likely 106/108 are utter failures economically, which long term means no Nvidia, which long term is bad for us all. 480gtx, highest possible performance with multiple cards, check, good value for money at really any level, nope.

I challenge anyone to top my numbers with a singe 5870, the 5870 overclock scaling is horrible even with 150 on the core, the 480 with 150 on the core scales amazingly well, the main reason I went for a 480 was the way it was beating a 5870 1000 core with stock clocks in most games, I knew when I clocked the 480 it would easily out gun the radeon and it shows, playing crysis on some levels at 70+ fps is amazing for a single GPU, the 5870 would be doing 40-55 FPS. Spilt second would dip below 30 FPS in some intense action moments with the 5870, the 480 is as smooth as silk no matter what's going on, on screen.

If I stick Crysis on max I get an easy 60fps as I have SLI. :D

Which ever way you spin it your missing out have a display at your res. Arguing that you have a 1680x1050 because you cant max out 3 or 4 games seems to me really strange. Especially as 99% of the games out there can be maxed out at 1080p/1200p and the amount of time you spend in the graphics section of this forum.

Anyway I will leave you to playing with your new card and hope that one day you will see the light. Just as you have done with the 480. ;)

Found some 5870 RE5 variable benchmarks and 5870 xfire, overclocked 480 is up there with xfire for the most part.

Again, for comparison - The "dip" in the third scene is very hit and miss - sometimes you get a dip, sometimes you dont  Its just as blokie is climbing up the ladder to the container

Amazing xfire scaling right there, single 5870 below.

Well doh, the GPU is doing 99% usage in most games with tons of AA, it's not going to get much hotter. Going by your theory if we run furmark at 800x600 rez the GPU will stay nice and cool lol.

furmark is a different Kettle of fish, furmark heat's anything up no matter what screen res, also no point running your 920 at 4.2 as well just stick it at 4.0 that's good enough for the 480.
