5870 with a Q6600

5870 will fit the in the Antec 300, you my have to remove hard drives if they are situated directly behind where the card would slot in.

My Q6600 is a B3 and I have finally managed to get it stable running at about 3.3 which is not what I wanted, wished ideally for 3.6, but I have a feeling maybe I should put up with it for now. The temps seem very good, surprisingly. I forget the exact settings I have in bios but I could always take a look later and post if anyone wants.

Fits fine, I'll post a picture tomorrow night as haven't got time until then

Selling my current board with Vista and that'll fund a change. May try and find a G0 CPU, but haven't decided yet

If its any help, I went from a Q6600 (@3.4Ghz) with a 8800GTX on a Abit IP35 pro board to a ATi 5850 and I've noticed a good gain in fps so far. I've only tried it with Vantage and Empire total war so far though as I haven't had time to test any other games out.

Its allowed me to turn a few more bells and whistles on and still maintain a higher framerate than i did with the 8800 GTX

Exactly the same as my setup, thinking of 5850 just now. do you mind me asking about your o/c? I could never get mine past 3.0Ghz - what cooler etc are you running and what are you BIOS settings?

I have just bought

ASUS P5Q PRO Motherboard + 4Gb Kingston memory for about £85

I have also sold my motherboard so :D

So the plan is to move everything to the new board when it arrives etc.

Tempted to find a Go Q6600 and sell my B3

Just a question around the PSU

As I'll have 5 x drives in the system and the 5870 on a Corsair 520W modular PSU in an Antec 300 :(

If you can clock the Q6600, i5 would be a bit of a rubbish upgrade.

Heck, I can't even warrant an i7 upgrade, need something with substantial gains before I move from my trusty Q6600, what's even better about it is the fact it only cost £115 brand new and I've had it since June 2008; value for money or what! :D

Can you tell me what settings you used in your bios settings to get that OC in your signature? The most I got was 3.4.

I'm thinking of going for a 5870, I've got a Q6600 @ 3.2 in an ASUS P5K, but can't get it any higher as the vdroop is awful :(

Would it be worth be selling the P5K, buying a 2nd hand P5Q (or similar P45) to get 3.6ghz+ or would I not really notice the extra 400mhz? I guess it would only cost about £40 to swap if I sold the P5K...

yup that option plays a big part when overclocking quad cores.

P5k boards running release bios or an early bios version will have an option called CPU voltage damper, same function as load-line calibration just different name :)

Which P5K board are you running? the deluxe, premium & pro P35 versions are all awesome at overclocking quads thanks to there 8 phase cpu power reg.

Running a 5870 on a Q6600 @ 3.4GHZ (B, G0) - I am extremely happy with the performance. Initially I was going to upgrade my CPU as well, but to those Q6600 owners out there the combo works a very well.

Just my 2c... :)

Yeah, I agree, my q6600 is at 3.6ghz and I don't think it's bottlenecking my 5870 at all so I'd say stick with what you have and go for the 5870 :D

Looking forward to getting the P5Q Pro and setting it up. What settings will people recommend in the BIOS?

Hesky82 - love the Le Mans picture heading down towards Dunlop Bridge / Tet Rouge. I didn't go this year and missed it so much, normally go EVERY year.

What about a core 2 e8200 @ 3.8, its that enough to run a 5850 or a 5870. I'm planning to get one near christmas. Thanks

How much is this worth on the used market? Just thinking as you can get a Q6600 for about £70 2nd hand these days...

Great topic - just wondering how well my dual core 6600 (not quad) will run with the 5850 (once you can actually buy one again)? I'm looking to run at 1920x1200 res.

Any idea how it will run once I overclock it? Also not sure how much I can overclock it with my Asus P5W DH Deluxe motherboard and 667mhz memory?

Advice appreciated :)

Matthew.

Its worth a shot, some of the old 975 and 965 mb's were actually pretty good at overclocking conroe c2d's.
I used to run an E6600 when they 1st hit the shops, it was a week 28b stepping and even with pretty bad vdroop under load it still held extremely stable at 3.6GHZ for as long as I had it.

It's a P5K vanilla - and load line calibration doesn't work in the BIOS on these :( Makes no difference at all. Guess another option would be to source a P5K Delux or something?

Do you think it'd be worth it for a potential +400mhz?
