If its any help, I went from a Q6600 (@3.4Ghz) with a 8800GTX on a Abit IP35 pro board to a ATi 5850 and I've noticed a good gain in fps so far. I've only tried it with Vantage and Empire total war so far though as I haven't had time to test any other games out.
Its allowed me to turn a few more bells and whistles on and still maintain a higher framerate than i did with the 8800 GTX
If you can clock the Q6600, i5 would be a bit of a rubbish upgrade.
Heck, I can't even warrant an i7 upgrade, need something with substantial gains before I move from my trusty Q6600, what's even better about it is the fact it only cost £115 brand new and I've had it since June 2008; value for money or what!![]()
What about a core 2 e8200 @ 3.8, its that enough to run a 5850 or a 5870. I'm planning to get one near christmas. Thanks
Great topic - just wondering how well my dual core 6600 (not quad) will run with the 5850 (once you can actually buy one again)? I'm looking to run at 1920x1200 res.
Any idea how it will run once I overclock it? Also not sure how much I can overclock it with my Asus P5W DH Deluxe motherboard and 667mhz memory?
Advice appreciated
Matthew.
yup that option plays a big part when overclocking quad cores.
P5k boards running release bios or an early bios version will have an option called CPU voltage damper, same function as load-line calibration just different name
Which P5K board are you running? the deluxe, premium & pro P35 versions are all awesome at overclocking quads thanks to there 8 phase cpu power reg.
