Make sure to buy a motherboard that allows flashing without a cpu. Or you may find you need a older cpu to flash it before you can use the 5000 series. Look for ones that have a Flashback feature or whatever the manufacturer calls it.


OR make sure the motherboard is already flashed for the 5000 series.

Yup but depends when he purchased his motherboard and if it was old stock and not the newer updated ones, so best to check and make sure at least to have a flashback option without a cpu.

On my X570 Xtreme Board the latest BIOS F30 is buggy as all hell - with it on at random my machine restarts out of the blue entirely by itself - had to roll back to F22 which is rock stable. Hope the launch BIOS is better as I'll replace the 3900X with either 5900X or 5950X

Yeah a bit worrying, I have b350 and with 5000 series coming out in 2020 I was hoping they would be supported (given AMD's commitment a few years ago). To be honest, at these prices I wouldn't bite anyway, maybe I'll keep an eye out to see what happens with 3900x prices next year, or any budget mobo options that support 5800x and then move the b350 to my son's PC.

Marginally cheaper I'd imagine, but once you factor in the extra cores and significantly better productivity performance I think its a better buy. Even if gaming performance is slightly worse

The 10850K is cheaper than the 5800X which makes it a very good option.

Rocket lake is due to arrive early next year which is a back port of intels 10nm to 14 but as its a new arc it should have some decent IPC improvements and it also supports PCIe gen 4.0

Backwards compatibility is a big advantage for AMD though. If you bought a board for Ryzen 2000 series chances are you're set for zen3. Intel makes you buy a new board for almost every new generation
