5D mkiii or D800?

Not much love for the Canon here.

I personally am going to say Canon. I love their systems. I think they are solid and are far easier to use than the Nikon. Maybe that's just because I am used to it but using a Nikon always feels a stupid way around.

What I don't think you are considering here is that the 5D III has far superior video capture at high ISO compared to the Nikon. Far far far!

The thing to remember is that yes I agree the biggest downfall is the lack of more MP compared and the DR which is so much better on the Nikon.. But look a things like flash line ups too. Remember you are buying a system and the body always becomes the most refreshed element.

Because I have sold so much of my gear now I am back in the do I go 5D way or D800 way.. I do think I'll stick with Canon.

As someone pointed out, it wont hardly make much difference to your photographs or make you a much better photographer. There's a lot to be said here for professionalism and practice.

Biggest question here which Ray has tried to raise is try them both in your hands! They are hugely different in size and shape! you may find the D800 is too big and uncomfortable. I've always found the Canon is better shaped for ones hand.

I'm not too fussed about video it's not a feature I'll use much off, then iq and dr are the things swaying me towards the d800, as for the feel well its not something that concerns me much I'd get used to any. I think I'm pretty much decided on the d800, just gotta keep saving heh

One review shows where their loyalties lie? :p Perhaps if all their reviews said Canon was better or at least a large majority but one review isn't exactly conclusive.

My logic is that unless it's not a strange typo or that they are not intellectually incompetent or blind, then yes I think we know where their loyalties lie. I'm not a reviewer, but even I wouldn't be able to hold a strait face if I told someone the 5Diii had better image quality, yet this magazine was ok with telling thousands a bare faced lie.

Have you put any thought into what else you'd be putting in you kit bag?

Although both makers have a pretty good range of lenses it's worth looking also looking at the lenses available to see if they do what you're looking for.

Unfortunately I doubt Nikon will be discounting any time soon. According to the rainforest store, the D800 is competing with entry/mid level DSLR's in terms of sales numbers, that's pretty phenomenal for a pro-level body.

A good cheaper alternative maybe the D600 when/if it's released. It should have decent DR range etc. and 24mp is still allot of resolution.

I love Canon but seriously the 5dMK3 is a crock of ****. Nikon clearly put time and effort into the D800 something Canon seemed to of forgotten about when they decided to make a £2.5K camera thats nowhere near worth it.

News flash.

It's not a crock of "****". It might not be as good as D800 in every department, it does not make it bad. There is a difference between good and better. Just because one is better than the other does not make the other rubbish.

News flash 2

It is not £2,500. It is like £2,000.

News flash 3

It's cost the same in Yen on release as it did with the mkii. Blame the exchange rate.

Final point

I bet you are basing this on reviews and charts and have not used either or dare I say it, even seen one in person. Because if you have and actually taken photos with it, it is not a crock of ****, if anything, if the photos come out bad. It's down to the user, aka You.

I shot some children playing hide and seek at the wedding and they ran full pelt towards me, auto servo, outer points, it hit every single shot in a 6fps mode.

I am now seriously considering the D800 myself and am just going to wait until Photokina now, hopefully if the D600 comes out we can see what that is about and also if Canon release something to compete with the D800 it might push the price down!

Also looking on your link the D800 costs $3k in America, that would be £1875 here! I think a proper UK one will cost a fair bit more than that here as the grey imports are around £2300. Do Nikon have an international warranty? I've read conflicting reports with some saying the lenses do and the bodies don't...

Yeh lenses do bodies don't. It's a bit annoying that grey imports of the D800 cost a fair bit more than the 5Diii when UK RRP is the opposite.
Personally though, if I'm spending >£2K I would pay the extra couple of hundred and get the UK model, as you get 2 years proper warranty.
I think the rainforest has them currently at 2.5K, although occasionally I'v seen them at 2.4K

Based on his review, I agree with him. So I'm prepared to offer you £500 and a 50D for your crock of a body. I advice you to take it now before everyone finds out how bad it is and your resale value plummets! ;)

It's my sisters wedding at the end of the month, if the photographer turns up with a 5D anything, I shall banish him :p

What's the AA filter comparison like on these.....

;)

:D

My point was (and the point of this thread) is that when you compare it to the D800 there isn't a contest.Canon seem to want to treat their consumers in a similar fashion to what Apple do - Drip feed.
Nikon seem to be the only ones out there that have bothered to put some serious cash behind evolving their DSLRs in all price points recently and its pretty sad to see.

the UK market puts it at £2.5k+ I have not seen a genuine UK seller that sells it anywhere closer to £2K.

Iv used them both briefly , yes briefly - maybe not enough time for a true comparison and i'l happily admit that but regardless I find what Canon are doing to their own brand at the moment to be completely mental.

Your initial statement is that you called it a crock of **** without any justification, even now it is very iffy as you have not used either extensively. Your opinion is contrary to every other review on the planet. Even if they prefer the D800 it does not make the 5D3 a crock of ****. It's fair to say one is not as good as the other but it is totally unfair to say one is rubbish because it clearly isn't.

They both made advances from their previous generation.

The D800 made improvements in the sensor, add in video (remember how many people HATED the video in 5D2? I don't see anyone saying the same in the D800...strange don't you think?)
The 5D3 made improvements in the AF (it is the AF in the 1Dx minus the colour tracking), add in silent mode, dual card slots.

plus lots others on both bodies.

They are both good, if someone can only take good photos in the Nikon and only rubbish from the Canon.

It's the photographer behind the camera.

As for the price, they are in the same bracket, by mere hundreds at most. I don't see what the price has got to do with it, its not like the D800 is on sale at £300 now is it? And how many people put down £2,500 as their first camera?
