the thing is, if you buy a car that's 4k or 6K, the more you spend, the less you will get back
6 months, id get a Focus, you will get close to your money back

Yup I get that but I'm still paying not much less to drive around in a dirty old thing. I don't know if I'm just having bad luck or spoiled by having new cars, but everything out there is really dirty and not looked after.I don't want to be in that for long trips or my daily commute so for me this rip off premium is to get something a bit fresher. Regardless I'm going to be paying way more than I should but I can't control the market. It's a mess. I've spent probably 100 hours looking for cars and have looked at dozens. They're all utter crap compared to the adverts. It's like tinder for cars.

I don't want to ruin our holiday in Cornwall because I don't want to get in a horrible smelly car. I realise how petty this sounds but go out and look at all these price range cars and you'll see what I mean. People just don't look after stuff any more. I don't want to rock up to my new job and set a poor impression either.

Lastly, 6 months isn't a definite. If I get a decent ish motor for 6k I won't need to shift it on so quick. An astra like above if be inclined to keep for a year or two. If I lose 4k in two years, even 5k, it's not terrible going

I agree with your logic and while an Astra wouldn't necessarily be my first suggestion for a car, there are certainly far worse choices and I think it would do you well for a couple of years. I don't think you'd lose big money on it after a year or two either and it looks pretty tidy overall.

I've just done a WBAC (which I know is a rip off) and it's value there at £3300  :( Alas, it's the market we're in, and I'm desperate now. Nothing is for sure but if this car behaves, I could keep it for a good few years meaning I'd change when I'm bored, not because I've bought a cheapy runabout that was only ever for 6 months until I sign up to a PCP/PCH etc. £6k for a 10 year old Astra would have been ludicrous 2 years ago, but it's a painful reality we're in now.

Gone off the Mazda 6?
The diesel, yes. Too many reported issues to worry about with known injector clogging or DPF failing etc.

The petrol version looks nice, just not sure how and when I'll get to see it now. The Astras are very close to work or home so I might have to gamble and say yes to one of them lest risk losing options.

I wonder if the bigger cars offer better value? Insignia? Mondeo?
I looked at Insignias quite a bit, but I was led to believe by quite a few in different forums/groups about reliability issues, particularly the diesels.

If you can't travel, you'd be much better looking at your local garages forecourts.
Yup, that's what I've been doing in the evenings, and is how I stumbled across these two astras. Not exactly my dream car, but a reasonably comfortable, cheap to run car that ticks the boxes.
