5th Year Maths Homework Question

So we know that for the number under 48000 it has to be 47951 or above to ensure it rounds up to 48000 for the thousand round and the 100 round.

47951 rounded to nearest 1000 is 48000
47951 rounded to nearest 100 is 48000

Then you need to find a number above 47951 that rounds to 10 at 47990, so the numbers available to us would be

47991-47994

That is my understanding.

Edit - in fact I think the answer for under 48000 can be anything from 47951 - 47994

That's why this question made little sense with regard to the nearest 1000, as it irrelevant. If it has to be to the nearest 100, then it's always going to be to the nearest 1000 regardless of what you type, as long as it's not the nearest ten. Stupid question!!! :D

just tell your kids not to worry about it as who has ever had to use these silly maths questions in real life unless you're some comet hunting nasa wizard? and even then i'd want an exact answer and not a round up.

i guess the answer is
47984
48015

Yet people wonder why kids get turned away from maths....

What a complete waste of teaching effort.... pathetic really.

You've entirely missed the point. It's not about rounding numbers (although, obviously you do need to know how to do that) it's a problem-solving question.
Problem-solving skills are very important to learn...

As much as I hate maths 'word' problems, people seem to forget that they are less about understanding equations/formulaes, and more about breaking down a complex concept in to workable parts.

So basically they just want the children to not give 48001 and 47999 as the answers, they want them to go a bit further out....

I am horrified that an office of adults had anyone who couldn't do this, let alone a sizeable number of such people.

To solve this problem requires nothing more than two things: the ability to generate criteria from the problem statement and then the ability to understand rounding up and down to satisfy those criteria.

I suppose technically it also requires a willingness to try, but this last one ought to be provided implicitly by embarrassment at not being able to solve a child's maths problem.

EDIT: I actually spent half an hour at lunch doing binomial distributions for a friend, but that's hardly deep mathematics and I don't accept that rounding up and down is something an adult should have difficulty with.

Its quite amazing how many people have failed to comprehend the question. Its more worrying how many people have understood the question and still got the answer wrong.

Can't believe that's a question for a 5 year old. I didn't understand rounding until I was in senior school.

Why didn't the questions just say,

Round this number to the nearest 1000.

"5th Year" not "Five years old". Child will be around nine or ten years old.

For the question, you can ignore the 'nearest thousand' and concentrate on 'the nearest hundred but NOT the nearest 10'. That little extra will cause confusion for a lot of people.

It wants two whole numbers (integers), with one greater than 47949.9 and less than 47995.0, and one lower than 48050.0 and higher than 48004.9.

Why? Well..
100's - 47950 rounds to 48000, but 47949 rounds to 47900.
10's - 47995 round to 48000, 47994 rounds to 47990.

100's - 48050 rounds to 48100, 48049 rounds to 48000
10's - 48005 rounds to 48010, 48004 rounds to 48000

Answers can be in the ranges: 47950-47994 and 48005-48049.

I'm late to this party it seems, but hopefully it helps some out. :p
