£600-£700 build.

The dvd drive i put in is a really old one from a computer i got about 7 or 8 years ago, and the cable it uses is a really wide one with loads of wires going across, and the only thing I have capable of storing data is my mums android phone

You need a SATA DVD drive then.

Then you can install windows.

Then you can download the BIOS and stick it on a USB drive and flash the BIOS.

Then the GFX card should be fine.

If I just bought a USB stick and booted windows from that and then downloaded all the drivers from there would it work? Cheaper than buying a DVD drive that i'll only use once

If you dont have access to another PC (using a Android phone) then how would you put Windows on the USB drive?

Download this USB tool http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msstore/html/pbPage.Help_Win7_usbdvd_dwnTool

then download win7 http://www.mydigitallife.info/official-windows-7-sp1-iso-from-digital-river/

Install the Usb tool, insert thumb drive, open the tool and select the drive. When the drive is ready, you will be asked to select the Win7 ISO file. Select it from it`s location and the tool will install win 7. When it`s finished, restart PC and select the thumb drive as the boot drive and away you go.

I have access to the laptop i'm using now ahah, and my friend lent me his usb stick so i'm going to boot from that and see if these updates will sort the monitor problem out.

You will want to do the BIOS flash first, that will cure it (has done for lots of people before in other spec threads)

Lastly,

The GFX card has a DVI-I and DVI-D connector.

If you tried using the DVI/VGA adapter on the DVI-D connector then you wont get anything.

Oh so all this bios thing is pointless anyway?

I don't know, I don't know what DVI connector you were trying to use on the card, you need to work it out with the info above.

Two possible scenarios,

1) You need a BIOS update
2) You were using the adapter on the wrong DVI port

edit, the VGA adapter may only fit one of them as they do have slightly different pin counts.

How can I tell if my monitor is digital or not? I mean its not one of those really old white ones its fairly new and its flatscreen. Oh and the bios update has just completed i'll try the graphics card now
