64-bit Android set for Q3

What are the advantages of a 64bit processor in a mobile? Ability to address more memory directly for apps?

I could be wrong but I wonder if this is one of those things like MP on cameras and resolution on screen used to move consumers to update. How long before we have 4K display on a 5" device? :) ;)

Well, technically performance is twice as fast, as twice as many bits can be accessed at any one time...

ARMv8 also improves a few things for the 32-bit side as well. But I doubt manufacturers will want to stick to a 32-bit OS when these 64-bit SoCs and 64-bit Android is released.

Hmm. Will that mean that Android will have a 32bit and 64bit versions?

For example, I’m literally on the cusp of purchasing a Nexus 5. Would suck balls if it wasn’t upgradable to Android 5 or what ever is the next major revision!!

Considering iOS 7 is split into 32-bit (for the 5c and older iOS devices) and 64-bit (5s), it would suprise me if Android didn't follow suit. Plus it would give Google a bad image to drop support of their recent Nexus devices so quickly and could give a bad backlash from other manufacturers.

ARM V8 has a brand new IS for the 64bit, which is a lot faster, they also have huge gains in security performance. The only real advantage outside of ram is having more bits to address afaik this only really helps a lot of floating point executions.

I did not know iOS7 came in two flavours.

Nexus 10 2014 should be released with the new Android version and guessing it will be pushed with 64bit, 4GB of ram... doubt it!

Huh, didn't realise it was that soon actually. This changes things. No point getting a new phone at all now if Q3 is when 64bit kicks off. Christmas 2014 is the time to upgrade :p

Hmm... Can I last with my GS2 untill then.

Answer is yes, but I have been looking to upgrade for maybe 6-9 months now... maybe longer.
