Hi guys i recently upgraded my monitor to a 23" Passive 3D. And my HD5850 is starting to struggle in games at 1080p in high settings.

what i want to know is will the 6970 come down to around the £200 mark when the new GPU's are released? as i will be looking to upgrade.

Would i see a noticeable improvement with a 6970 from a 5850
? thanks.

Well, the 5850 dropped significantly in price (I picked a 2nd up for £130 new and crossfired) after the release of the 6xxx series so there is no reason to suggest why you won't be able to pick a bargain 6970 card up in the coming months. You will have to look around though. Prices really do vary when it comes to last gen cards.

yeah, 6970's are already a good deal cheaper than the 7970's are going to be on release (pricing now popping up around the web of £440-500 without a clue to actual stock availability - suspecting those with actual stock in hand will be at the higher end)

the only hope might be people upgrading and willing to drop their old card on ebay and such

I doubt the 79** will have an effect on the 6970, but what will happen to the 6970 when the 7870 comes out? If it is supposed to be equivalent to the 6970 then surely the 6970 has to drop in price or are they looking to charge £300 for the 7870? Which would be silly as that would be close the 7970 1.5gb price.

Either way something has to drop either when the 78** comes out or when Kepler arrives.

I guess i will justturn a few settings down and make do with my Card for now. I only want diablo 3 this year anyway and my system will max that no problem.

Was it one of those LG 3D monitors I saw elsewhere for £145 that you got RedTop89?

If so, do the games only run at 24fps or is it higher?

In answer to your question, I don't think the price will drop by much, especially if Nvidia don't shift their prices when the 7970 releases.

Gibbo said that the 6 series replacement won't arrive until March, normally they would drop, but because of the high 7970 prices, they might stay the same.

24hz is the limit of hdmi but if you use the normal PC input you can do 1080p 60hz on the LGs

and passive 3d is much nicer than those horrid shutter glasses that give me a headache in 10 minutes

They'll be priced relative to performance/power usage ratio compared to the 78xx series. Let alone the impression of being a previous gen card with a 69xx series badge on it which normally forces clearances prices.

It is the LG D2342 monitor mate, and i don't know what the other guy is saying about it limiting to 24fps with a HDMI because i play Skyrim in 3D with 30+ frames in the wilderness and 50+ in dungeons. the HDMI has not limited the frames at all and the LG says to make full use of the Monitor features you should use HDMI 1.4. i know my card does not have a HDMI 1.4 but i still se no limits to frames when using it.

Its a shame about the prices really i would have thought they would come down.

I can't see them coming down much. Maybe 10% at most I would think. They are still tremendous cards and great value, and in an entirely different price bracket altogether.

When you may see price reductions is when the 7850/70's are released if as the rumours suggest these are just refreshes of the 6950/70 but with lower power cunsumption and possible overclocking headroom. But all that remains to be seen.

Hmm i was hoping to pick up a 2nd hand 6950 maybe (2gb) that I could possibly flash for about £140 ish.... When the new cards drop. Pretty hopeful after reading some threads

I doubt there will be much of a reduction on the 6xx series as they are still very popular and capable cards. I imagine they will just go EOL and be phased out and replaced with the 7xx series.

Second hand market is a little bit different, and you may be able to pick 1 up at close to that price in the coming months as people sell up to move on to a 79 series. I wouldn't buy a 6950 with the intention of flashing it to unlock the extra shaders though as it may not be possible. What you would be better doing is realising that the 6950 is an excellent card in its own right and if it unlocks then it is a bonus. But don't buy one on the assumption it will unlock, because if it doesn't then you are going to be left disappointed with your purchase, despite as I say the 6950 being an excellent card.

Ah yeah, my post came across the wrong way. Flashing it would be just an added bonus especially over my gtx460 768Mb CUtop.
Which I hope id be able to get around £50 or more when I sell it on, nice lil overclocker it will be missed.
