What the hell is it for?

Is it a cruising gear, or is there some grunt behind it? OR surprise surprise is it one of those pointless things. Ive not even tried going into it, even when doing motorway speeds ;)

No this isnt some flash thing, I dont even know what or why cars have 6 gears :( And all I drive a Dodge Journey, so im assuming it could be somethign to do with the Americans, although the engine is a 2.0 VW diesel... so who knows

As above its a cruising gear, why would you drive at 70 on a motorway in 5th, when you can do it in 6th at lower revs?

Reverse F T W. 25mph on the redline. Cruising at 70 is for sheep
That reminds me of the first time I drove a 6 speed car actually. Was the Civic Type R pool car we use in work and I was a bit nervous about going into 6th in case I chose reverse instead :o

Very stupid I know but an irrational nervousness :p

Worst i've got 6 gears thread ever.

Seriously, its a 7 seater.. not even popular in the UK and is just a 2.0 diesel, not some fancy engine either.

Thanks for all the serious replies though, I just didnt think about using it tbh, when the bloke said it has 6 gears it never even computed... then i looked at the gear stick and thought oooo whats that :D

I mean to get into reverse its like a Vauxhall (well like an 06 Corsa ive driven anyway) where by you lift a little thing under the stick and push it just a bit further left and forward than first... confusing, and tbh if I didnt have reverse sensors that beeped once ive got the thing in gear, id probably have been ramming forward most times ive reversed :o

Oh well, gives me somthing to try next time.

Using :p

It's great for relaxed driving. I wondered years ago whether 6-speed boxes were worthwhile, they most definitely are.

Absolutley, I don't have a 6th, but I can quite happily cruise in 5th doing about 35-40mph, if there is steady paced traffic, just feather the go pedal once in a while to keep the revs above 1000.

Obviously you need to be able to whip it into 2nd/3rd if needed, but save fuel, not a child, yo!

Our work cars have them, felt weird at first as it was where reverse should be in my head, but I got over it and now I'm not an idiot.

Why does that matter? You get on the motorway stick it in 6th, set cruise to 75 - 80 and drive.

How long have you being driving for?

Was responding to your quote of 'worst ive got 6 gears thread ever' - so thats why I posted what I drive, as in no way was I trying to brag.

Also ive obviously not been driving as long as you, as ive not been awarded the 'drive at 80mph on the motorway its not over the limit' badge yet :p

If your car has six gears, then 6 is your cruise gear. By staying in 5th you are just burning fuel for no reason.

If overtaking on a motorway, you may want to drop down to 5 or even 4 depending on the ratio of the box.

Why do you think cycles have 18-21 gears? or HGV's for that matter - less work for the engine once you have reached a comfortable speed.
