6th Gear

I'm so used to having 6 gears whenever I get in a work pool car I'm paranoid incase I accidentally put it in reverse instead thinking its 6th.
Stupid question but what would actually happen if I did that?

I don't get it? Surely dropping the revs as low as they'll go when sitting on the motorway is ideal.

Reminds me of an old woman who lived up the road when I was a kid. She would only shift up if she wanted to go faster. So if she was going as quick as she wanted to go and happened to be in 1st at 6000rpm she thought it was fine  She must have been 100 (maybe a slight exaggeration :p ) and drove an old Toyota Starlet. I was impressed that it stood up to the abuse!

I've never understood why some really old people drive at such high revs. They sometimes dial in about 5k before pulling off- boy racers don't get a look in!

Especially in car parks or parking the car in a tight place, all you can hear is the engine going WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA and the car moving a centimeter at a time. Might as well stick a 'clueless driver - stay back' sticker in the car window.

It's just another gear, and like any car, you put it in top when cruising at normal speeds (well as long as you are over 1000RPM or so and not putting the engine under undue load) you just put it in top gear, whether that be 4th/5th/6th/7th or 8th..

Only on some cars, 6th is so long, the car won't actually achieve it's top speed in that gear, in which case, I guess it's reminiscent of the old overdrives, but all my 6 speed cars are 'normal'..

The 'I've never tried it' statement did make me chuckle a little.. bless..

This. Plus fuel saving. Why would you not use it?

I hate the environment is one of the reasons :D

Seriously though, I just never even figured about it.. I mean ive only had the motor for about 2 weeks and today as the only day ive used it on the motorway, so its not like ive been ploughing around for years in 1st gear ;)

In future though, be sure to know ill be in 6th.

I generally bypass 5th in favour of 6th, I only drop down to 5th for over taking, or road works etc...

6th is about 1,800 RPM for 70mph (120d sport)

6th is awesome. Smidge under 2000rpm at 70mph where it's right in the peak torque range for effortless overtaking.

It might be a nasty clattery diesel in a city car (Copyright Fox) but it makes for very relaxed mile munching in my book.

First time I drove a 6-speed I kept thinking it was in 4th everytime I rested my hand on the stick, not a pleasant experience dropping to 5th at 80mph lol

The problem I have is forgetting the work van doesn't have a 6th. I've accidentally tried to put it into reverse at 30+mph a couple of times. The sound of grating cogs usually reminds me it's not a good idea.

Change down into 5th at 80 wouldn't be a problem for mine, it's only 3000 rpm.
