I read a while back that the Phison PS5018-E18 controller was set to release H1 2020. Anyone heard anything else on this?

I'm holding off on PCIE 4.0 drives until it looks like they are close to maxing out my X570 board. Should be a long lasting upgrade.
 
I'm doing the same thing. This is the first I've heard of an Phison E18 (heard of E16 & E12). I also have heard of a Samsung 980 pro gen 4 with 6500MB/s read and I believe it was half that for writes.

Got some links on how SSD compare but they don't mention this latest stuff only reviewed SSD and for some reason don't include a TBW stat in the spreadsheet:

Samsung 980 Pro, Evo, QVO is probably under wraps until the consoles release the PS5 is almost certainly using one of these or a variant and they will want to tout the console hardware as much as possible.
 
Can't help feel this is a technology looking for a use.

Mightily impressive numbers but where is this speed actually making itself useful in the consumer space?
Once the PS5 and Series X come out. Games will start needing high speed drives to function, rather than the novelty of just loading into lobbies quicker.

I can kind of understand it on consoles as they can use it as a page file as they'll be quite RAM limited, but what game needs to load assets at 7GB/s? CPU or GPU will bottleneck long before that I'd have thought.

The difference between good old SATA3 and NVME drives at 3GB/s isn't amazing in current titles.

That's because current titles are developed to expect lower loading speeds.

Epic has already implemented a few things into Unreal 4 that perform a lot better with SSDs to the point where you'd say it's a requirement.

Lots of games are developed for the lowest common denominator, which are consoles. So games won't typically have requirements for very fast storage because of that. Now that the PS5 and Series X have really fast storage, developers will be pushing their game engines and games down that route.

Exactly this. I think people forget the hardware had to come first. It then takes time to write the software that can make use of it. It was a very long time before 64bit processors wetter being fully utilised. I'm expecting impressive speeds from PC's with high core count CPU's, 32GB RAM and fast NVME once developers get to grips with them. In the meantime we could do with a small app that could demonstrate the potential.

Quite the opposite. The idea is that data can be pulled/streamed off the storage almost instantly rather than having to hold it in RAM just in case, which means that far from being RAM-limited, the RAM can actually be put to better use without having to always compensate for slow storage.
 
Mark Cerny confirmed that the PS5 will be able to use a PCIe gen 4 m.2 drive to expand the PS5's storage, but only certified drives will be able to be used.

The stock PS5 SSD reads at 5.5GB/s, while most PCIe 3.0 M2 SSDs on the market today hover between 3GB/s and 4GB/s. However, Cerny and Sony expect PCIe 4.0 SSDs capable of speeds of up to 7GB/s to be readily available by the end of the year.

I'm assuming it's your hand drive that will need to be the fast PCIE 4.0 drive? We need capacity to increase quickly as even a 1TB fills quickly these days.

and move a lot of files around
me i am awaiting pci-e x8 drives lol

Agreed, how often do we hear "you'll never need more than..." only to find shortly afterwards that extra speed, RAM, VRAM, storage etc. is necessary. Not that long ago massive arguments were raging over whether more than 4GB of VRAM was needed. Now I hear discussion of 8GB not being enough.
