Just installed by new my new Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 750GB :D BUT it is only really 698GB  I bit ****** off reallly as this is to back up a lot of my music and film collection. 50gb is a lot of space especially when some of my other drives are only 74gb anyway. It's false advertising! Lets hope i won't need that last 50gb for awhile...

Anyway i don't know what you guys think - shall hopefully not be too displeased with how the drive performs elsewhere - sata 2 speeds ;)

Cheers Magoo

Harddrives are always like this. Except maybe the 74gig raptors ?

I wish they would just advertise there true sizes....

It's just not big enough!!

(I've never even filled a 60Gig HDD yet :D )

Serious?

Starting to wounder why people buy expensive rigs when later they have even less than 60 gb's of games/ vids on it  , Have to buy another 300 gigabytes like every 6 months myself.

To the Op:

Like all hdd's, 320 is actually 298, etc... unavoidable, just use compression to counter it i suppose ...

File Allocation Tables (FAT) are responsible for eating away at the capacity of the HDD too, although I doubt it'd amount to several gigabytes

Really hard drives should be sold as say 320gig formated size then we would truly be getting what we pay for.

Don't you ever consider burning off disks?.......... its cheaper then buying more hard drives.

74gb + 120gb + 250gb (this one is storage), and i'm always filling up the storage drive, delete what i don't need and burn off what i want to keep.

I admit i was lazy before and just brought more drives, but it makes sense to just burn off what i can and not have to fork out on new HDD's everytime i fill one up.

Im looking into getting a new drive aswell and it always gets to me why they dont advertise the space after it has been formatted.

So far i have filled up my 300gb Sata and my 400Gb ext Lacie. Looking at another 600gb ext Lacie to see me through another 6 months. I just use a small 80Gb for Windows only.

Its a good job i delete my porn after "using them" otherwise i would have filled around 2.0Tb just in porn in 2006 !
Watching a porn video the 2nd time just isnt that much fun as the first time, doesnt have the same affect :( so i just delete and replace with a newer one and so on and so on..........

I cant be bothered backing upto DVD/CDR and rarely do. The only thing i put on DVD is my applications and system stuff but i also back that up on several drives as its only a few gig.

For OS,
1 kilobyte = 1024 bytes
1 megabyte = 1024 kilobytes
1 gigabyte = 1024 megabytes

For hdd,
1 kilobyte = 1000 bytes
1 megabyte = 1000 kilobytes
1 gigabyte = 1000 megabytes

So, the OS only recognise a 750gb hdd as (750/1.024/1.024/1.024) = 698.5gb

Yeah, but i like to keep the original dvd files. Dual layer discs are still a little expensive... and some films are only 54% quality on a single layer. Alright for my old TV at the mo, but when played on a nice samsung 32" lcd tv (the next major purchase) they look very dodgy... burn them later when the dual layers drop again in price :D

I do need quite a bit of storage - !'ve backed up most of my families and friends music cds - and have collected a lot due to a relation being quite famous composer along time ago - my music alone has reached 250gb!!!!

Its priceless - would be devasted if i lost it

Its just like the new Hitachi 1 Terabyte drive actually working out at 930gbs, rather than 1000.

I LOL'd at this.
