7700K --> 9700K / 9900K

Funny thing is I first upgraded from GTX 970 SLI to the 1070 Ti because I thought anything more would be a waste on my ol' 2500k. Then I realised that I just couldn't played multiplayer anymore without the new CPU. With hindsight I obviously would have went for something better like the 1080 Ti, but the 1070 Ti is more than enough at the moment. It is however nice knowing that I can now use the power of those bigger cards down the road - the 1080 Ti gets circa 40-50% more FPS whilst the 2080 Ti (If I win the lottery) gets circa 90% more FPS.
I'm only teasing. There's nothing wrong with a 1070 ti!

As you say, if you decide to upgrade in the future you now have a cpu that wont keep the GPU waiting.

I know! Just thought I'd explain why someone buying the 2nd best CPU and Mobo combo went for a 1070 Ti which seems strange in comparison.
Actually, when it comes to gaming, the 9700K is the best CPU. It actually beats the 9900K because hyperthreading is often a hindrance in games.The margins are very small, but Intel got it wrong, the 9700K is the "world's fastest gaming CPU". You made a good choice between the two.

Ah, interesting. I knew HT wasn't needed for gaming, but I didn't realise it could have a negative impact. I did consider going for the 8700k to have the HT, although someone put me right in the upgrade forum section on the 9700k. Good to know :D

Lack of hyperthreading results in better boost sustainability. At 1080p the 9700K ends up being 1-2% faster than the 9900K across a range of games. At GPU limited resolutions of 1440p and above the difference is less than 1%, but still in favour of the 9700K. As I said, very small margins, but funny given the fuss and fanfare of the 9900K announcement.

It's only really workloads like rendering which show significant benefit from hyperthreading.

Nice detailed review with benchmarks here:

Over the weekend I installed my new CPU/MoBo/RAM upgrade (with existing 1070 Ti). Went for a i7 9700k and Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Ultra, with 16gb DDR 3000mhz ram.

On the old system it was 35-55 FPS during combat with regular stutters to 15 FPS. On the new system it's a minimum 85 FPS during the heaviest combat, and most times it's 100+ FPS. Never stutters and also was able to increase quality settings. In real terms, it's a minimum 100% performance increase and probably 150% on average. It also removed PBUG stutters added 20-30 FPS on Rocket League.

Those are specific games with specific CPU demands granted, but it's an important reminder that those statements like "the i5 2500k is still enough" are pretty dangerous when you think about it. It makes me cringe to think that someone like me might have been convinced to skip a CPU upgrade and get a 1080 Ti etc. instead.
Oh thats so wonderful to hear, I am truly pleased for you!!! I think this "your CPU is good enough" Mantra needs to stop - in many cases a CPU/Mobo/RAM upgrade is a far better bet than a new GPU.

Would I benefit from moving to a ninth gen processor? I game at 3440x1440 100hz.

95% of my usage is gaming. Sometimes I do some encoding stuff but it's rare.

Is four cores completely outdated now? If I don't upgrade now I'll upgrade next year for sure with 10th gen.

I’m sitting on a 5960x at 4.5 and 1080ti SLI at 4K and until Zen 2 I’m holding fire, I really only play Arma 3 and would benefit hugely from a 9900K BUT server speed in multiplayer would still hold me back. I would wait for Zen 2 max 5 months as prices will drop and I’m pretty sure Zen2 will smash 9900K in gaming.
