7950 Crossfire vs 680 SLI at 5760*1080 (Eyefinity/Surround)

Didn't want to hear about these problems, I'm about this close |<------>| to pulling the trigger on a couple of 7970s based on this thread...

Was already worried about coil whine...

And Crossfire+Eyefinity+X79 mobo issues...

WhyScotty has just gone with one Asus 7970 and I believe he will be getting another. He will give you some info/feedback I am sure :)

Eyefinity and CF / TF are a ******* mare - all is fine on a single monitor, but try and run anything game or bench wise in Eyefinity - BSOD / Black Screen Lock up - terrible

Im persevering for now but rapidly losing my will to carry on :(

My HIS IceQ's idle at a very consistent 37 (top) and 29 (bottom).

I haven't tried overclocking them, but in the heaviest benchmarking (not much gaming!) I've done in the 2 weeks I've had them, they max out around or under 75/70. Just did a hectic 5 minute run in Crysis 2, Ultra settings, DX11, High Res Textures at 6024x1200, and Afterburner reports max temps 58 and 55. I'm happy (now that the metro problem is sorted!).

No problems of that sort here. I've used 6950 CF and 7970 CF on eyefinity.

On the ROG forums an AMD beta testers says AMD know about the issue and are working on it. supposedly a fix may be "close".
I went X79 partly for the extra PCI-e lanes. It now looks like I'd have been better of going Z77 (I think the Eyefinity & CF/TF are purely a X58/X79 issue).

I've sold one of my 670 Windforce cards and would like to sell the other. Then need to decide if I get reference cooler 670s (have my eye on a couple of EVGA 670 FTWs) or reference cooler 7970s (have my eye on a couple MSI 7970 OCs).

Only reason I'm changing at all is cuz Silverstone recommend reference coolers for TJ11.

Gotta say I'm more impressed with the Windforce cooler while using a single card than I was with SLI WindForce.

Nvidia SLI and surround (and 3D surround) works "out of the box" that is all :p

It didn't work for me when i tried a 690 GTX, got crashes on every boot. Once in windows, i'd activate SLI, and it owuld be fine until shutdown.; Next boot up - BSOD. It would take 2 or 3 tries to get windows to load, and when it did, SLI would be off. I'd set it, and it would work, until the next boot.

I think either I had a faulty card or some remnant of Radeon drivers was conflicting. I didn't have the patience to figure it out, I returned it.

Mine didn't.

I still can't figure out a nice way of changing between Surround and non-surround when using SLI and 3 monitors. Trine 2 doesn't seem like a game that needs 3 screens...

I was having a PITA time switching between surround and single display but after flashing the same BIOS to each card, problem solved. Trine 2 was the first game I fired up in 3D surround and worked perfectly.

I was only switching to surround/non surround, sli/single to do some benchs. No need to keep changing it anymore as I shant be doing anymore benchs :p

Lol gregster you just got pwned.

Good for me...

Was a joke lol but you just proved the point that it does not just work as flashing a bio's means it just does not work all the time and vice versa for eyefinity.

I know and my answer was tounge in cheek bud. When I say it was a PITA, that means it required a restart or on the very rare occasion, a reset but that was it. I still consider Surround a very easy setup.

Can you say the same for eyefinity?

Pretty sure in the ocuk benchmark thread it was the surround people with the issues about switching back and forward from single screen to triple screen where as eyefinity users were not. I think if you get how to use each vendor correctly then i see little problem either way. I only use my tv and monitor which does not require eyefinity but its as easy as clicking replace and i am all good.

Yer, I have no idea as I have never tried eyefinity (one day I may well do). Once it is all working for either, it is all happy days.

I installed my second 7950 today and was greeted by temps of 61c while running the same overclock as the MSI Twin Frozr which was running around 75c.

So the "good" MSI is going back as well. An obvious dodgy batch of cooling on these MSI ones.

Now on my IceQ HIS card I think I might have dodgy VRAM! When will it end?!

The MSI thing can be written off as just one of those things but I might genuinely have a failed card now which after the fiasco of the heat on those MSI cards would be irritating timing.

I shall be claiming the postage back on the MSI cards for obvious reasons.

Looks like OCUK have a pallet of bad batches, they need to sort that out.
