7950 Crossfire vs 680 SLI at 5760*1080 (Eyefinity/Surround)

Are you still on the same windows install? Im guessing yes as you were dreading reinstalling so much :)

Make sure afterburner is applying voltage to the second card. Perhaps trixx is worth a try, plays nicely with AMD cards. Gives me 1.3v out of the box, and 1300mhz as an upper limit without any modding, so you should get similar limits.

Afterburner gave me stuttery movement and camera panning in skyrim so I went to Trixx.

One card I've got a feel for. Need to do the same for the other.

Can't seem to get the unlocked limits working for both cards though in MSI AB.

Also getting some BSODs which only appeared in Crossfire. Potential issue my end.

Hi mate, I had the same problem with my card. Have you tried installing:
AMD_Catalyst_MSIAB_patch
ASUS GPU Tweak to get higher ccc?

Hope that helps you as it worked like a dream for me.

I cannot get afterburner to let me adjust the voltage on my 7950's. Is there something I'm missing. I have added the unlock text and enabled the oc mode with a 1 to the setup file. Enabled and disabled overdrive but its still blanked out.
Sapphire trixx allows the voltage to be changed but keeps giving me ulps warnings all the time.. ?

Bravo 10 out of 10! For putting your money where your mouth is.

I hope it works out for you. :)

Yeah the voltage adjustment works for me. I used Matt's guide and one card is fine. It's just crossfire which is proving a pain.

AB xcl method above will only unlock the Overdrive limits for the active card. If you have other cards in a crossfire, technically you will have to disable crossfire and plug a monitor into each card and run the xcl unlock process to unlock each card. This can be quite the hassle. Luckily there's an easier way.

Anyways, I extracted the powerplay tables allowing one to edit and not do the song and dance.

*Open notepad, copy paste this in there save it as a *.reg file or rename .reg then merge that into your reg. Edit the "0000" for each card you have. Simply paste/create the key below and label each corresponding key 0000/0001/002/etc for as many entries or cards as you have in the registry. Also with this key, you don't have to create the shortcut sd with Part 1.

**If for some reason it's not working for you, you can simply open up your registry, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E968. Easy way is Local, System, CurrentControlSet, Control, Class, then scroll down to "4D36E9" set then hit the "68" at the end. Inside you find "0000" files, and each folder represents a physical card per slot. So if you moved card 1 that was in slot 1, into slot 4, that will create a new folder. Try not to move cards around too much because it will create a lot of folders, making it confusing. Also, if you followed my manual uninstall method, your registry should be cleaned up nicely.

Ok, now scroll down to the 4D36E968 folder and extract that folder to some place. Open up some place, and edit the reg file. Basically you just delete everything except the table and header from above. And then simply create more entries as instructed above.

Card 2 is about 10c hotter than card 1 at the same voltage. Goes up to 85c on a Heaven run and that's with the volts only on around 1.14 :(. 75c I could live with but 85c is a little much.

Tempted to send it back :D.

Ok.
I am genuinely looking forward to the results, infact, it is the first thread I have ever subscribed to.

Out of interest, is that with both cards in the case or just the one?

The reason I ask, is I have had differing temps on SLi setups before now.

Both times with both cards in the case (to ensure consistency). I know one card will be warmer but this when when I swapped the cards around. So exactly the same scenario.

I even turned my side fan round to extract instead of blow and that raised temps another 10c to 95c.

I am actually willing to stick my neck out and say, all this HD 7950 hype is purely that....hype.
It's almost like the fairytale 'The King and his New Clothes'

I will be so surprised if you manage to beat GTX 680 SLi with HD 7950 Crossfire.

'Edit' and that is by no means a pop at ATi, the price difference is not comparable.

I have mine running 1200/1600 with 1.15V max temp of 72.c. My top card gets a little bit hotter than the top which would be heatsoak from the lower card.

My fans at these clocks are quite noisy. Tbh in game I can see very little if any difference with the cards clocked or at stock. Benchmarks show gains but tbh I think for gaming I will just run them at stock.

When you swap the cards around is it the top card or the bottom card that gets hot? Or is one card running constantly hotter no matter where it is.

It will be amazing if he even gets close to matching his 680's. Bear in mind they were some of the best clocking 680's on here (air cooled anyway). And that's £240 AMD cards compared to £360 Nvidia cards, roughly a 50% price difference.

That was with dual 1150/1700 clocks.

Not bad :D. Shame one of them got to 91c  As the other one doesn't get above 75c in the same slot I would be inclined to say I've got a stinker.
