7970 or 770?

So the 770 cant overclock? come on it can overclock and when it does overclock to same gains as a 7970 it will beat it.

what am i missing?

The 770 has no voltage control so unless you get a golden card with masses of overclock headroom a half decent 7970 will beat it with voltage control.

Well, aside from game reccomendations.:D

But thats for another forum, well never let you live that un down mate.;)

Nooo don't bring that here. :D

I regret nothing. :p

I read a review today for a GTX 770 lightning where there was practically nothing left in the tank for overclocking, all they got was 25mhz

http://www.tweak.dk/review/MSI_GeForce_GTX_770_Lightning_2GB/1595/5/1

Thanks Kap. Obviously some cards will have more headroom, but reviewers tend to get the pick of the bunch. My point is on average with a voltage locked card you won't get far. Unless of course your card is a 780 or a titan.

EDIT

Blimey that was a 770 lightning as well.

Shame I have missed the OP before he made his purchase.

GTX 770 was the obvious recommendation since it's simply a better card for the games l33th3tr33 plays.

Although a 7950 3GB would be the sensible choice in this situation. They overclock like beasts and can be had for around £215 ish with games knocking off further £25 off that price.

An HD 7970 is £300 and GTX 770 is £330, so they both look fairly unfavourable in comparison, but I'd go with the GTX 770 at that resolution.

You sure about that? Less than 1fps at 1080p, slower at 1440p. Add 25mhz or less onto the core clock of the 7970 and you will lead the 770 in those games listed. I don't have Farcry 3 blood dragon results but the 7970 had a bigger lead in that game than it did in the original farcry 3 over the 680.

I don't consider TechPowerUp to be the most reliable website for reviewing graphics cards and it's unfair to post 2560x1600 benchmarks since the OP will be playing at 1920x1080 anyway.

Battlefield 3 and Far Cry 3 are two games where Nvidia particularly outshines AMD.

Half right. Far Cry 3 yes but BF3 they are equal with 12.11 drivers.

I like anand and i normally use them but their results here are a bit off im afraid. Its just not in line what what the majority of review sites are posting or what i see myself. If you see my previous post about this.

I did a bit of looking around as to why Anand's results are so different to what other review sites have been posting and i found out why. :) Dave Baumann from AMD had commented on it after asked on beyond3d.

Any small lead the 770 has in these titles at 1080p the 7970 will wipe off with a very small overclock. Considering the OP wants to overclock there really is no reason to go with a 770, especially if the small overclocking headroom as indicated in this review (25mhz on the core) is anything to go by.

Sorry to hijack, But this is kinda relavent to me,

I get paid tomorrow and would like to pick up either a 770 or 7970.

I would be playing in 1080 with the option of going 3way.

Been getting in to Arma 3 recently so i'll be playing that a lot and Dayz, with a hint of BF3.

Also I do a fair bit of Video editing on Sony Vegas, not sure if its relevant as my 3770k handles that pretty well.

I'm looking at the MSI lightning which is on sale this week, tempted at £395 or forget it and go for gigabyte?

If you don't plan on overclocking your gpu then the 770 is a bit faster @1080 in some titles, though not by much as seen in the graphs i posted. The other games rely on the cpu more than the gpu's i think so won't be much difference there.

If you like to overclock and over volt then id go for the 7970 all day long. People can say that 770's can overclock, but i will need to see it stand up to a well clocked 7970 before ill believe it.

Btw that is a great price on the fastest 7970 money can buy.

Most likely i'll be overclocking it.

I edited my post above a bit. :)

The 7970 you picked will clock like a beast.

Any chance you can order a 770 and that msi 7970? Clock them both as far as they go and post some benches?

My money is on a comfortable victory for the 7970 with both cards clocked up.

As much as I would like to, I just haven't got the money to do it.

Any other opinions? Otherwise I'll probably jump on that Lightning bolt....See what I did there :D

Thanks Scotty, looks like you have a very good boost clock on that one. 1267mhz? How far does it go with overclocking? From looking at a few reviews your stock boost clock is further than the main review got with overclocking, nice.

Looks to be about 10fps behind my clocked 7970 on older drivers in sleeping dogs. I did run a Tomb Raider 1080p bench a few months back in one of Arthur Hucksakes threads ill see if i can dig it up.

I have an older sleeping dogs bench where i use SSAA high as well instead of Extreme.

What were your clocks for that that bench?

Also, would those clocks be game stable as the 770 are?

Not really sure on max clocks, still working that out.

Ran 1306/8000 in Heaven valley (+39), it looks like not much more
without more volts.:(

Not bad though, beat quite a few 7970's

Why does anyone still care about Sleeping Dogs? Is anyone still playing it? Or are we choosing it because it's slower on GK104 due to the lack of compute and therefore exaggerates the difference?
