7970 prices

This is partly why the economy is getting worse, people have this idea that because it's the done thing it's somehow right, it's not, pricing things based on perceived value is greed, pure and simple, we could all be running high end cards for half the price if things were different, same goes for most things, it's better for them to sell more for less, that way they still make good profits but everybody wins.

Who said it was right or fair?

But it is the way it is.

If i could time travel ten years into the future i could probably bring back a card worth £150 thats a few times faster, makes you think...

It makes me think that if you could do that you'd be selling such cards for vast sums of money ;)

Seems as though sales of these have come to a halt. Gibbo said they had about 80 left earlier and they are still showing 10+ on the 7 models they have in stock.

Maybe it takes ages to update.

If this is true then IMO it bodes well for a price cut in a few weeks time. They may try and hold prices until the beginning of Feb though as a lot of people will be poor because of christmas and they'll be hoping for the 'payday impulse' buyers. If Gibbo (and others) still have dozens of unsold cards in the middle of February then prices will come down. All it would take is for Nvidia to drop prices then no one would even consider a 7970 if it's £150 more than a 580.

If a 3GB 7970 is under £400 come the 7950 launch then a 1.5GB 7950 for £300 couldbe a very good purchase if it has the same OC headroom as the 7970's.

High end cards should be priced more reasonably to what their true value is, the materials are the same year after year and the same as lower end cards, so i don't see how can they justify the excessive costs, things have gotten silly considering we're still mostly playing console ports for hardware over five years old.

It's a luxury product, nobody needs it. The price will be what people are willing to pay for it.

In this case it may or may not work for AMD. I hope it won't so we can see some reasonable price drops.

Large US retailers like Newegg have plenty of HD7970 cards priced at around £420 if you added 20% VAT.

A few UK retailers had cards at around £420 but have upped prices massively as the day progressed.

It is typical UK PLC price gouging.

The best thing is for people not to pay such high prices in the first place.

Youd have to be mad buying one of these already coming from dx11 hardware.

Why?

You get what you pay for.

It's priced just above GTX 580 3GB and offers superior performance.

It is also value for money if you can get one for £420 as that's the cost of two 6950s ish that give you similar performance.

Sure, not many can afford it but it's a good product however you look at it.

It's a shame that AMD has taken this pricing approach but it's easy to justify this business model when the competitors have nothing to put against it really.

$670 when you including shipping and VAT, that translates to £435 with current exchange rates.

They're also out of stock with every single card that there is.

Why do they have to justify the price?

As long as there are enough people willing to pay what's being asked then the price won't go down and may even go up.

If there were enough people willing to pay £1,000 for a HD 7970 then that's what it would be priced at.

Totally agree, an item(s) is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it, and their are lots of people willing to pay the high price for these G-cards, the only way you will get them cheaper is if no one buys them, but that's not going to happen any time soon.

?? The UK pricing does not include free delivery for most people anyway and when you add postage it costs even more. On top of this out of 7 HD7970 cards listed on Newegg,FOUR of the cards are under £430 and sold out quickly. Newegg is HUGE($2.5 billion annual turnover).

You do also realise, that multiple UK retailers bumped up prices by 10% during the course of the day.

Its hilarious that in the US,that such a huge retailer does not feel the need to to so though.

I don't see your point either, you have to include shipping and VAT for the total projected price.

£435 is what you'd pay Newegg if they sold their cards at the same prices over here.

Are you willing to pay that much/more/less in the UK, I couldn't care less. But that's the real outlook on the pricing scheme in the UK.

It's no surprise that the US has more large competitors and probably 20 as many sales on the same market. Competition will drive the prices down but for that you need to include a lot more factors into the costs of distributing the cards over here.

what is really funny about all the "it's over priced" complaints on here is that actually OCUK seem to have sold out of the most expensive brand name items first, so clearly those that are buying them really don't care what price they are

Only if you already had 6950 or higher I think, it's not a great deal but if you are on a 5850 or less it's a decent upgrade.

It's a very decent upgrade coming from a 5850 but these babies were £200 at launch and 7970s are £450+ (talking about the ones in stock) so one would have to spend over twice their previous budget on an upgrade, have had crossfire 5850s setup previously or gone mad if they're going to make such a bold purchase.

Not to mention that 5850s were going for £100 not long ago...

Give it couple of years and these will be the budget range of cards :D

It wouldn't be profitable.

Or they are bat****insane to put it simply.

?? I don't see your point either as you are making excuses for UK retailers.

You seem to forget that UK retailers also charge for postage too - not everyone is getting free postage. Multiple UK retailers charge postage too and the cheapest card with delivery this week(looked at quite a few retailers) is £447. The same card was £416 with delivery this morning.

In fact the OcUK HD7970 for £431 for delivery in a few weeks is the cheapest HD7970 in the UK.

Most cards are around £460 to £470 including delivery now. Many of these cards were around £420 to £430 earlier in the day. MOST of the Newegg cards are in the lowest price bracket NOT the highest one.

But that's the real outlook on the pricing scheme in the UK.
