7970 prices

I remember paying the same for a pentium 4 as my i5 cost. By this pricing the i5 would cost thousands.

hopefully they'll lower prices in a few months when nvidia have cards and ATI need to look like a good deal.

I was thinking the same thing . My e6600 cost £240 but my 2500k cost £170. over twice as quick but about 2/3 the cost  But as i said earlier ,i dont blame overclockers i blame people for paying these prices . If i was in there or any other sellers shoes i would do exactlly the same ... Lamborghinis aint cheap you know :D

There is a mental conflict at the moment in my head ;)

I'd only upgrade to XF, and that is nearly £1000... yowser. My 6990 seems amazingly good value right now!

Oh be quiet.

At today's exchange rates, the launch price of the 5870 would be rather similar.

Everyone moaning is just butthurt that they can't afford one. I can't, and I'm gutted :D

Luckily I got a golden 580, so I'm happy :)

You be quiet, its not the fact that people can't afford one, its more that people are not daft enough to pay those prices apart from a few die hard select few.

Shock horror as shops and suppliers know people are mugs and will buy anything new immediately without thinking it through properly.

You do know AMD kept the clocks deliberately low to keep within power margins?
You are aware that these card will clock high enough to trade blows with Mars cards yes?

Think about that for a moment. Requiring a clock increase defeats the point. A 40mm^2 GPU should lose to an equal-sized 28nm GPU with equal clocks. If the gap is small then that means the architecture is not providing the same performance per mm^2 (which duff-man mentioned).

This, except even though I cant afford it I wouldn't pay £500 for a graphics card anyway. Most I've ever paid for a card was £299 for a 7800GTX, cant remember what year that was.:)

Think about inflation, man. You should adjust how much your willing to spend now.

Well ok, fair point, but how long have we been in recession now? Whilst the 7970 is new architecture i dont think it carries the same clout as the 5870 did, for £300, and in no way is £500 plus (not counting the OC card at £420 as its not available and prices will probably drop to there anyway once the 'crazy' first 2-3 weeks are over) a justifiable price for this card, in my opinion.:)

Prices are already dropping elsewhere, I've been monitoring and one etailer has dropped their lowest price card from ***Stop discussing competitor pricing***

I don't know why there's all this "discussion" about the price.

It's immaterial if the card is "worth the price".

If you want one you pay up.

If you don't want one you don't buy one.

If you want one but consider the price too high then tough. Bite the bullet or do without.

There are plenty of things I might buy if they were cheaper but they aren't, and that's life.

I would only buy from oc anyway as it is just up the road. so will wait until they are a more affordable price for me on here i'm in no rush as my 6950 does a stellar job.

These cards will be below £400 very soon. I'd bet money on it, as I said in the other thread.

What annoys me is the varying prices accross retailers, it's a **** take. What are some of them doing? Driving there in cars and picking them up one at a time?

Very simplistic view there Surveyor and one thats always quoted when there's much debate about pricing. Personally I like all this debate and without it the forum would be pretty boring. Besides we all have differing views.:)
