8700k/8086k vs 2700x

Speaking of which I'm an Intel Fanboy but these prices I'm seriously thinking of going AMD, I'm completely clueless when it comes to AMD, I "assume" the memory/power supply/AIO cooler and ram in my current rig DDR4 etc will just swap over?

Im not on anyone's side amd or intel, I just buy the fastest and the best I can afford at the time of ordering, I have had a fair amount of amd's over the years.
The K5 and K6's back in the 90's
The "3d now" cpu in the early 2000's.
Then the athlon thunderbird and finally the AMD64...

I think I have had 5 intels,,
the good old 486 DX66, P3 400MHZ, P4 800MHZ, i5 2500k and the i7 2600k

But I always stick with AMD gpu's, I have only ever had 1 NVIDIA gpu.

The 2700X has gone down to £290 now on OCUK. That should be your decision made for you right there. Better buying that or a cheap 2600 as you get the option to drop in a 7nm 3700X next year that will surely be the fastest CPU on the market.
Really? £10 is whats going to swing me? :D

I'm really torn now between the 8096k and the 2700x.

My issue is I don't want the 2700x to hold me back in VR gaming like Fallout 4 VR. Everyone seems to use an 8700k for that on benchmarks to hit maximum FPS (in general for all games)...

Hmm..... !

This link seems to find the intel edging the amd...

And at 4k given how close the 2080 on benches is to 4k 60fps.. i feel like every FPS counts.. !

Straight up FPS the 8700k is best bet.

You seem to be getting a fantastic deal on the 8086, can the same supplier do such a deal on the 2700x? If not, 8086 is probably your best bet I'd guess.

Nah sadly not. The Ryzen at £290 seems to be the lowest. I'm going to see if I can pull them further down on the 8086k.... ! The free cooler of the 2700x really attracts me at present as its basically another £80.. so overall 180... but... realistically im not sure if I'll stick with the stock cooler as I'm 95% sure I'll have to OC it.

edit:

They've put the 8086k for 380... i know its just £10... lol.

So 8086k for 380
2700x for 290...

Its a decent deal for the 8086k right?

I'd be looking at the minimum frame times @0.01% / 0.1% for VR, which is where you get nasty judder. Maximum FPS are not as relevant IMHO.

There's quite a bit of anecdotal evidence that Fo4VR runs OK on 2700X: https://www.reddit.com/r/Vive/comments/9n8ifq/fallout_4_vr_went_from_barely_playable_to_butter/

Just 2p from a VR geek.

Contrary to public belief, the Wraith cooler is OK, if you plan to use PBO on the Ryzen CPU.
Though if you go down the route of all core OC to 4.2-4.3 then you need better cooler. Though same applies to the 8086 which at 5Ghz will burn 10% more power than the 2700X @ 4.2.

Yup I wish there was benchmarks for that stuff!!! I'm looking around the net.

Likewise. It's a shame [H]ardOCP haven't done any benchmarks recently. They were really useful 2 years ago. https://www.hardocp.com/reviews/vr/

I'm on Fury X and 6600k, and it really sucks these days for VR... Noticed that the 6600k causes judder in Fo4VR constantly, and I've given up on the game until I upgrade.

I tried the Wraith Prism before i chucked the H75 on my 2700X, was a bit noisy tbh.. I'm just keeping it as a backup now :)

I do find it interesting how people use the stock cooler as a way of selling the ryzen, surely most people who are upgrading will have a decent cooler already? I'm on a 2600k but I have a noctua nh-d15

Unless you have a new cooler or a kit for am4, your old cooler won't work for AMD. The AMD coolers are actually write good and you don't have to replace them like you often have to with Intel ones.

Exactly, and I already have a much better cooler, because I've had a PC for years, and have upgraded parts, and the coolers whenever something new comes out that's good - I sure as hell will be using my noctua and not the stock one if I get a 2700x.

Im still using my Thermalright True Black cooler with my 8086k, that I have used with my 2500k and 2600k. Just to keep everything matching..hehe. Thats why I cant push the cpu any higher then 4.9ghz, as it starts to get toasty,

Not everyone is upgrading, or moving from a desktop. I went from laptop to desktop.

Bought a separate cooler anyway, but the 2700x stock was definitely upto the job (at least not overclocked).

So the intel stock shortage is real.

8086k from rainforest discounted to £380 is still out of stock.

Given that Ryzen gives you your own cooler and I don't think I'll be overclocking the chip straight away, I'm now leaning towards the 2700x again given that the saves I will get on the cooler + processor price difference, I could likely invest into a new processor next year IF I feel the need.

Which mobo/RAM would I be getting (preferably I'd like wifi) if I went down the 2700x route?

Well if you plan on upgrading the CPU at any point at least the AMD platform allows that option ... Cheaper chip overall , money saved on a new board. . the new CPU (next year ) will pay for some of itself comparably . unsure as to why you would want WiFi on a desktop , but other than the better CPU phase config on more expensive board your paying for astetics and features . if your not all core overclocking , and sticking to the stock cooler would make sense to buy a cheaper but decent board ... My Asus TUF x470 is hard to reccomend as it doesn't support multi GPU or have a particularly good VRM but its cheap and can hold a 1.35v 4.1 all core pretty well .
