8700k pre-binned question

Depends on core volts Sa and io for temp drop.

I tested at 1.35V Sa io 1.05v 4.9ghz. Highest core after one hour avx prime 96c. With delid highest core 71c so 25c drop. Delided with 1.4 core 5ghz 76c so even with more volts still 20c drop

Really good info. So, 2 questions for 8 pack if I may be so bold:

1) Out of all the 8700K you tested, what percentage DIDN'T make the minimum 'binning' grade (that being at least 5GHz) and so went into your pre-built systems?
2) My case isn't suitable for W/C, but I have dual 14cm fans front, and 14cm side and rear. On the CPU I have a Noctua U14S with dual 14 cm fans. Is this suitable enough for your binned CPUs, or does it have to be better than that?

Thanks in advance!

Simon

Hi there

I can probably answer this, but 8 Pack will be along:

1. Without delid and a good AIO 5.0GHz is a push because you can't use the voltage required unless the processor is de-lidded. With a de-lid so far 5.0GHz is achieved are 90% of stock, I think only one processor failed and was binned at 4.9GHz for SI.
2. Your pushing it, we recommend a 240mm AIO, as such you could use your cooler and you may hit binned speed, but at the same time you may also have to reduce down by 100MHz and run a touch less voltage to keep the CPU from throttling.

The de-lid is very important on these processors, your talking a 20-26c reduction in loaded temperatures, this is huge and this delta allows for you to use more voltage to stabilise higher frequencies.

Coffee Lake we believe will be our biggest sales on binned processors yet because the de-lid pretty much means 5GHz and above is now a reality for the masses, if you pay the price for our binned processors. :)

Of course we understand there are some experts out there who can do this themselves, but for the majority of our customers de-lidding themselves is not an option, because their is a real risk of bricking your CPU, trust me even 8 Pack has killed chips doing this service, its a rare occurance but it can happen, though with our own patented tool it has pretty much now eliminated these failures, but in the early days 8 Pack did this service by hand.

I think the fact that 90% hit 5Ghz is a good indication that a) you'll be extremely unlucky to get a 'bad' one (if indeed you could call 4.9Ghz bad!) and b) it shows how de-lidding will become the norm. From the reviews I've watched, a stock 8700k is already a beast and certainly on-par with the 10-15% improvement over a stock 7700k for a £60 price difference. When you start to OC you just need to be a little more careful with the 8700's cooling but all indications are that its the OC monster that the 7700k was and even the legendary 2600k Sandy ;) I will be definitely upgrading in the short term to the 8700k paired with an EK FluidGaming loop. Bring it on!

I think after having very low temp with my Skylake 6400 and then going to my 7700k i'm quite scunnered by how hot it is for the money.
I think I'll wait a good few years till they release another cool running chip even when overclocked.

I personally think this is the biggest reason Intel will never go back to solder.

They want you to delid, as it removes their warranty obligations. They always used to say that overclocking/overvolting voided the warranty, now it really does because delidding is basically required.

The reviewers were hitting 5ghz without delidding. 5ghz on all cores doesn't seem essential anyway.

I am honestly not concerned like Tom but many want to see low temps and of course low temps help stability. Hence why we are offering the service as there is a market for it.

There is indeed a market for it, created by Kaby Lake chips, that actually needed de-lidding to get really good overclock results with acceptable temperatures on non exotic cooling.

Coffee Lake may end up not needing it anywhere near as much, but it's hard to tell from the data we have, that's not coming from a reviewer or a shop trying to cash in on it.

When stock is in the hands of the actual end users, I am sure we'll get a much better picture of how many people can get 5.0GHz (or more) on a good air cooler or AIO at reasonable temps, until then people are buying the ability to get stock early, and nothing more.

8700K are hitting 5ghz without delid with easy...... no need to pay a high prem for pre binned....
Sure pretty much all ES do without delid. Now wake up and smell the retail Silicon.................How many Retail did you test by the way awaybreaktoday?????? Please feel free to show us your own testing.....

No need to adjust anything. Just show us your retail testing to back up what you said. Maybe 10 cpu would be OK initial sample size.

Lets get real, Overclockers have cashed in on the new 8700k chips by pre binning and retailing the good overclockers at a higher price. Its what i would call excessive profiteering from us the consumer. Id rather take my chances from somewhere else than having a company blatantly profit from silicone lottery. It just takes all the fun away from actually overclocking ourselves.
