8800GT Ramblings Thread

I like the GT too and for me it was an upgrade since I had dodgy performance with my GTX. (Not a clue why)

Judging from the UT3 demo it's gonna run nicely enough at 1920x1080 and I couldn't care for AA on that game (too fast IMO) so it's definitely been worthwhile, Gears, Crysis and CoD4 all run great and when UT3 is out I'm done for games this year on the PC. :D

Will upgrade again in April/May time I think.

Guys,
What drivers are you using ?

I was initially using the ones that came in the box, worked ok, but gave me issues not runing X16 PCI-express bus..
currentGTbiosandDriverinfo.jpg

resulting in a 3d06 score of 7694 for the rig in sig:eek:

30GHz3D06.jpg

I went to nvidia site downloaded the latest ones, but now when I run 3dMark 06 I just get a balck screen, not sure its hung, but no images.

Tried this earlier and in Bioshock It would crash after the plane crash with these latest drivers

Any Beta ones about ?

Anyone see something I might be doing wrong ?

:o lots of money for a 1000 point increase over my FX55 rig...Jeeez

Getting my copy of Pro Evo sometime in the next 2 weeks, got the 360 on standby.

Ouchies about the 2900, good look though.

Admittedly looking forward to seeing Eastenders on the larger screen (:o), I watch loads of TV shows on this PC too so it's gonna be great seeing them, moving from a 20" Benq.

That's what I like to hear :D.

The 2900 without AA runs everything superbly, even CoD4 at full res on the CRT is silky smooth. It's something I've been starting to live without so I can get full IQ otherwise. I run World in Conflict with everything full with 2xAA and other titles I will add AA until it starts affecting movement. It was hard going back to the 2900Pro after playing with my m8's GTX cards for a month. The GT is a lovely card but I'm just going to hang on till after the year now. I thought my card was a great buy (well it was at the time) but look how wrong I was man? :(.

I'm going to get a 37" LCD next year as I sold my 22" LCD screen in my sig to a good m8 for £30, only had it about 8 months and paid £220 odd for it lol but he's done me plenty of favours. You will love your new screen as I'm missing even the widescreen 22" 1680x1050 screen as it's wider than the 21" CRT screen that I'm using. The 37" with that res will be a major change over your old 20". Are you getting a VESA wall mount?. Eastenders in all it's glory, just think of it lol.

Another person that will drop AA for performance. I can totally agree with you as if you are enjoying a game then jaggies are less of an issue as your too busy scoring/killing/flying/roundhouse kicking etc.

So GoW just as smooth as GTX?.

GTX is already gone, getting £250 for it soon enough. :D

I really like the GT so far. Crysis on all high (without AA) runs nicely enough and my 3D Mark score has gone up, not that 3D Mark matters. I am really impressed with the design, it's incredibly slim and it runs very cool.

I can already see the hit that this card takes with AA etc. but I'm not too bothered as it's pretty much completely limited to Crysis and no other games I am currently playing. I'm not planning to upgrade my monitor any time soon either, so I think all in all I've done the right thing.

Absolutely fantastic news :D. Well done. Now you can retain great gaming with some money back in your pocket after a nice run with the GTX.

So will a HD3870 be ok for your shuttle? :). Cooler, quieter, less power. Seems to be a good move?.

Download GPU-Z and see if it reports your pcie bus speed as 0X as ntune appears to in your screenie.

It doesn't report it as that now on the latest Drivers:

But they don't ******* work now....no game will play (just hangs with coloured squigles everywhere) or in the case of 3d06 just hangs with black screen.

Its been a long day and I have gotten absolutely nowhere with this...:(

I don't have a shuttle, my HTPC is in a Silverstone Sugo and I'll probably get a 2400Pro for it.

Though, you might not have been replying to me. In which case I'll just disappear. :p

Lol, no I was replying to you. I stupidly thought you had a shuttle :o. Oops. Well even so, a HD3870 for that :). A bit much maybe but it's a habit :D.

Haha true. I've not paid any attention to the new AMD cards really, so I'll look into them, but the passive 2400Pro does look ideal. If there's a passive, super low-end 38** card then I'll check them out. :)

I only use that box purely for watching movies on, nothing else. No gaming etc.

I'm not *too* fussed about AA, well not fussed on UT3 or Gears anyway! Gears isn't that jaggie I found and UT3 is too fast to bother caring!

I'm not sure what mount I'm getting actually, will probably be wall mounted or I might just use a stand, getting a new Ikea Jonas desk with it too.

Pretty much everything is like the GTX...but better! Crysis is now playable with all on High @ native res. Gears is exactly the same, albeit a tad smoother on the bits I played (Act 5 opening) even with Dx10+AA.

No more TF2 dipping to 30 fps on ctf_fort with 16xCSAA/AF and all maxed either.

I tried reformatting, reseating, different drivers, bios update, resetting cmos, changing PCI-E mhz...etc and it still underperformed. (Had both PCI-E power cables in, no low power messages)

Was definitely in 16x mode too, very odd but oh well, not a problem now, still got some spare cash left and walked away with a better card (in this case) the Accelero S1 and a Razer Diamondback. :D

Does anyone have the link to the thread where it listed the details of the 8800GT's arrival dates and expected numbers? I cant seem to dig it out.

Cheers.

EDIT. no worries, i've found it.

I wouldn't bother then. No point in a gaming movie watching machine  lol. Cheap and nasty with the best HD movie experience is what ** after and that'll be the 2400Pro you've mentioned I take it?.

UT3 is crazy :D and I agree too fast to really be jaggie watching. Gears of War I've yet to try under my card but it ran brilliantly on the GTX and did look good without AA.

I'm quite surprised you seen a good increase from the upgrade. Seems as if something just didn't want to give. Weird . Glad you're at least getting some decent performances now :).

The desk will be perfect to use. It's just that I have a gap above me that would suit film watching perfectly as my 3 seater is facing my back now so the TV would be directly above my head when extended with the wall mount.

As for the Razer mouse. I have the Death Adder and Copperhead so I know the quality of your mouse is decent :). Also the S1 looks quite good from reports. Early xmas for you lol.

Well, I don't need one at the moment because the stuff I currently watch is easily playable in 720p with the onboard Geforce 6100, but when they drop in price I'll probably get a Blu-Ray drive and start buying those instead of DVDs so I'll need something DHCP compliant. :)

UT was another game that my GTX had a hissy fit on too actually, I can't wait to test the final game on my GT! I remember on UT I got to areas that went <30 fps just standing still on that Shangrai map, very weird dodgy performance once again.

Hmm yeah I couldn't understand why it started underperforming, the card was actually alright when I first got it. 3DMark still gave me normal scores (I think 5400 ish sm2 score or w/e is normal for a GTX) but gaming performance was below average despite my efforts. :|

Cannot wait for the desk, nearly twice the size of my current and it's a decent one for once, not a cheapo one from argos. :o

Ah the Razer is great, oozes quality just gotta get used to it a bit, much more sensitive than my 800DPI MX510. :D

As for early xmas then yep it literally is! Since my TV is a present. :D

Making £150ish in about 3 weeks so I may buy the HD-DVD drive for the 360 too, especially since there's that 5 films when you buy the drive offer going on.

My 8800GT was showing in stock but it isn't actually in stock.

damn I need it for a LAN this weekend. Oh well lets hope the 7900 holds out. Still got my new case coming though. :D

WOOO000TTT! at last!!

Arrives in the morning, via UPS, tracking it now and its in the wharehouse ready to go!!

Only thing is, dont want to go to work tommorow now..... ;D
