I just purchased a BFG 8800gts 512 (By the way the bracket was bent, as per a couple of posts i have seen lately - the box is wholly inadequate - couldn't wait for a replacement so bent it back)

My 3dmark06 score has gone from 5100ish to around 8700ish - I was expecting more. this is at 1400X900

my system is

C2D 6300
2 gig geil 6400 stuff
Gigabyte 965 Ds3
XP Home edition
using the latest non beta drivers
and other odds and sods

Any ideas whether I am getting the right score?

many thanks

updated chipset drivers and tightened memory timings - CPU still at stock - 3dmark 8790 - not quite what i was expecting.

Any ideas greatly appreciated - I may OC the CPU to see what effect it has....

As stated already 3dmark06 is heavily cpu dependent hence my poor 3dmark results - 11,000

In fact my 3dmark score only went up 1000 points from a 8800 GTS 320Mb to a 8800 GTS 512Mb (heavily overclocked as per sig)

So 8700 seems about right for a processor running at 1.8Ghz

If the op gets his cpu up to 3Ghz he will see a massive boost

Very true

If we had the indiviual score breakdowns it would be easyer to see where the problem lies.

Noob Q: Overclocking the CPU might make the 3dMark score improve, but will it have much effect in games?

Depends on the game.

Take my 3dmark score with a 3Ghz AMD. It looks poor compared with people with a slower Intel cpu and inferior gfx card but in games it flies.

Okay, my cpu is holding me back, maybe by 10% framerate in games. If you search this forum you will find a link to a review site where they compared the difference in framerates between cpu, memory and gpu.

The gpu has the biggest effect and yes the cpu makes a difference too but since you can have a gpu giving up to 10 times the framerates between different cards and the cpu maybe only having a 20% spread it is gpu first.

That's why I dislike 3dmark06. Going from a heavily overclocked 8800 GTS 320Mb to a heavily overclocked 8800 GTS 512Mb only gave me a 1000 point boost in 3dmark06 (from 10K to 11k) yet all may games have increase by more than 10%
